Because personality gets you absolutely nowhere with women until you meet a high looks threshold. You might not get far with great looks and a bad personality but if you are a man with looks at that woman's tier, good luck in life, you're gonna need it.

I've known wealthy and upper middle class dudes. Most don't want to date a chick working at McDonald's, or even a social worker. If they can get an attractive woman who makes a good living, they'll take that over an attractive woman who doesn't make much

Some guys don't mind bankrolling a woman but most I've met willing to do that are socially awkward and probably wouldn't get a girlfriend otherwise.

I don't think you comprehend. It's other people's social demands on men that move them to select for the social status of a female mate. Women are genuinely attracted to social status, money, etc. Men just want a good woman that is attractive that creates an effective support mechanism for him in the home. Men are really simple in both their desires and intentions.
