Ironically, the so-called "toxic masculine" behaviors, like being aggressive, stoic, and dominant are the same ones that make women want to fuck you.
This has led a lot of Feminist critics, like Karen Straughn, to make the observation that Feminism is simply a society-wide shit test created by women. Those who pass the test, get laid.
[–]chessto 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
So you pass the test if you're a feminist or if you aren't?
[–]Wingflier 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No. You pass the test by engaging in "toxic masculine" behaviors.
[–]Svartanatten 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you have to ask I think you fail..
[–]GltyUntlPrvnInncnt 75 points76 points77 points 2 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Any male behavior a woman doesn't like = toxic masculinity.
[–]Coyote_CoolAid 18 points19 points20 points 2 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Me: Breathes.
Woman: OMG you are just full of Toxic Masculinity.
[–]GoodFaithSockPuppet 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And you just exhaled it!
(How does one learn this power meme)

I'm pretty sure they didn't invent the term but they did redefine it or they are using it to their own advantage.
[–]fnork 28 points29 points30 points 2 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
It's made up bullshit either way.
[+]VlDRlS -23 points-22 points-21 points 2 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
How would you call toxic elements of a set of gendered behaviours?
[–]fnork 17 points18 points19 points 2 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I think immaturity and rudeness suffice descriptively, "gendered" this or "toxic" that is silly and counterproductive.
[+]VlDRlS -8 points-7 points-6 points 2 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If we assume that toxic masculinity as a reality exist, wouldn't we also be able to refer to similar bahaviours in women as toxic femininity?
I'd argue, that there is utility in these terms, while having limitations.
[–]fnork 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It's the pomo variation of yelling "cooties" at each other.
[+]VlDRlS -8 points-7 points-6 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm not here to defend specific uses of these terms. Just their definition.
[–]DissidentTwink 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Is there gendered behaviour? Yes. Is it cultural and biological? Yes. Could aspects of these be positive and negative? Yes.
Is an obsession of gender culture healthy for society? No.
The idea of toxic femininity provides as little to society as toxic masculinity does. It’s a cover to vent personal frustrations with the opposite sex.
[–]username2136 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Masculinity is a positive trait. There are no toxic elements to it otherwise we will no longer be talking about masculinity.
Do we call it toxic friendliness to win someone's trust and them stab them in the back? No we call it manipulative/toxic behavior.
Can you name a single segment of masculinity that isn't toxic? Usually, when people talk about TM, they say most if not the entire list of what makes someone masculine is toxic.
[–]VlDRlS 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
i think, that there are alot of positive traits in masculinity.
Now, these are traits, that are generally viewed positively, but imo can be expressed in a toxic manner, as in overprotectiveness, bullying or taking risks despite a negative risk/reward ratio.
A person from pop-media, that i would describe as toxically masculine would be Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. Don't get me wrong, he has good intentions. He wants to prepare his men for the worst.
we could describe all these behaviours on their own, but, as i already mentioned, i think that there is utility in grouping these together.
[–]OxygenWaster02 14 points15 points16 points 2 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
It was originally defined by a mens support group as a result of a society that attempts to feminize men, but then the feminists took it and warped the definition into something that favored their agenda.
[–]Wingflier 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I've never heard that before. Do you have a source?
[–]VlDRlS 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
He's not entirely correct:
toxic masculinity doesn't referr to a feminization of men, but to immaturity in men
Longwood, W. Merle; Schipper, William C.; Culbertson, Philip; Kellom, Gar (2012). "American men, religion and spirituality". Forging the Male Spirit: The Spiritual Lives of American College Men. Eugene, Oregon: Wipf and Stock Publishers.

add.: which would be consistent (though not entirely the same) with the modern useage of the word, as reffering to elements of stereotypically male behaviour that is toxic towards themselves and/or others
[–]SsoulBlade 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Ironically toxic femininity is a thing but of course feminists look the other way.
[–]VlDRlS 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s not that she’s full of hate that’s the problem, it’s your patriarchal, heteronormative beauty standards “oppressing” women like this.
To teach us all a lesson she’s not going to shave her armpits and will free-bleed all over the pavement.
Take that patriarchy!

There is such a thing as toxic masculinity. The term has just been overused and abused to the point where nobody takes it seriously anymore.
[–]chessto 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Toxic behavior exists in many forms. Applying "masculinity" to it is a way of conveying that masculinity is toxic, very similar to how condescendingly talking to someone has become "mansplaining"
The idea is to try and correlate unwanted traits with males, thus by comparison increasing female virtue without actually doing anything.
[–]TahtOneGye -1 points0 points1 point 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No it isn’t, masculinity is the core of our society

LOL @ degrading. You forgot 'toxic', 'abusive', 'Do you hate your mother?' 'Who hurt you?' and "I don't feel safe".*
Are there actually people in your circle where that 5th-grade shaming language actually works?
*I forgot to yell out 'BINGO!!!!' A simple oversight on my part. Apologies.

[–]Zero_the_Unicorn 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You mean like how feminists have been using "incel" as an insult for the last year or two almost exclusively, and in the same breath as "women aren't defined by their sexual encounters"?

Judging someone's value based solely on how much you want to fuck them is toxic masculinity.
[–]RentorarTora[S] 12 points13 points14 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't want to fuck that ugly creature… LOL plus I'm a woman and I am straight and engaged to a wonderful man. I don't want to go near that

[–]iwishiwasamermaid 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm gonna go ahead and say it's not that men won't fuck them..many men will fuck whoever. Good looking men won't treat them well, and if they do, they're the soft feminine type of men that these women don't respect anyways so all of their relationships end up as dumpster fires where they (the classic feminist looking girl) want to "try polyamory" and have a collection of simps that they're not attracted to whatsoever. The masculine men they are actually attracted to have zero desire to have anything to do with them. Bitterness ensues.
I also want to say "toxic masculinity" isn't what they think it is. Toxic masculinity is when men can't talk abou being raped, or express emotions for fear of being called a "fag" or "pussy". It's far more detrimental to men than women.
[–]lunaflor -3 points-2 points-1 points 2 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Being Latina, I can definitely tell you that toxic masculinity is real, we just call it “machismo.”
[–]Charlie-555 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
