Among married couples specifically, the drop was even more dramatic — from about 73 times per year in 1990 to 55 in 2014. Given that, in general, women are the control-valve for sexual frequency and their sexual desire wanes more steeply in a LTR^1-5, I suspect the observation in the article is a function of relationship duration being especially challenging on women's desire today vs previously. Once can speculate on the exact interplay of factors and the impact of social media, online dating/apps, etc.

While it found unmarried couples living apart reported more sexual satisfaction than cohabitating couples, married or not (consistent with the article in the OP), the major limitation of the study, which the authors acknowledge in the full-text, is they didn't control for relationship duration, which is almost certainly one major confounder in the association with living arrangement. It would be interesting to see a study tease apart the independent effects of these two covariates.

You have to separate this out by age as well. Old married people drag the numbers down dramatically.
