beyond the raised awareness of sexual assault in our society that #MeToo prompted, the movement also underlined the general shittiness of men

Only to small minds.

As film critic Jessica Kiang put it in her review, The Last Duel “illustrat[es] … how men are now and have always been, the absolute fucking worst.”

Oh look, more open, mask-off sexism. And yet there are still plenty of people out there who actually believe misandry doesn't real.

I wouldn’t want to give them, or costar Adam Driver or director Ridley Scott, too much credit for this not-especially-novel insight

Rank bigotry isn't especially novel, I'll give the author that. I hesitate to call anything so pretty and benighted an "insight" though.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Damon and Affleck are tapping into something primal about toxic masculinity that, being men, they know exists in all men.

I see the hatred has ratcheted forward from "toxic masculinity only refers to forms of masculinity that are toxic" to "toxic masculinity exists in all men."

Is all this misandrist subtext actually in the film, or is this wish-thinking on the part of the feminists writing about it?

Good question. It's unlikely I'll watch the movie to find out.

The film itself may or may not be proudly misandrist, as the author claims. All we can know for certain is that the quoted reviewers are.

I saw a review of the movie on Youtube, it would seem that the most remarkable thing about this movie is a lengthy and graphic rape scene which is repeated almost exactly three times.

Lol “men are bad”. Wtf does that even mean?

It means they think men are bad.

I've pretty much given up on Damon since his speech in Australia.

I hated that movie

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
