“ Comic books and DND have always been cool,” said the person who obviously wasn’t alive in the 80s And definitely didn’t experience the Satanic panic

Absolute fact. Who can forget "Mazes and Monsters."

This is pure absurdity. People, not just women but other guys too, always attack nerdy men for having nerdy hobbies. It’s always “you need to get a better, more outgoing hobby, go to the gym, dance, play sports bro, etc.” But if you say “You know what you’re right it’s because I’m nerdy” the narrative just totally changes on a dime. Now suddenly women have always loved nerdy hobbies so it’s just our personalities? It’s goalpost shifting plain and simple, so that no matter what we do we’re always in the wrong.

Granted, there are toxic nerdy guys that definitely fit the creepy neckbeard stereotype, but that’s all it is. A stereotype. They’re a minority. These same people would get mad if you said all women were a certain way so why is it ok to do it to men?

And while I’m on the subject, what is this obsession they have with guys saying “females”? This post makes it sounds like guys are walking up to girls and saying “hello female specimen”. I’ve never done that shit though, generally I use their names when speaking to them directly except when in an appropriate situation like discussing gender politics on a large scale.

To be fair, I have seen some guys refer to women as "females" and at the same time refer to men as "men" or "guys".

I understand this feeling because I have seen a lot of people use terms like "bros" and "dudes" to describe men and it infuriates me for some reason. Like for example:

"Dudes just don't listen to us"

"I hate when you call out dudes and they get upset"

"Dudes just want to feel oppressed"

"The bros at LWMA hate women. Look at this dude complaining"

To be fair, it is pretty cringy when guys refer to women as females but men as men in the same breath (or worse, foids).

The thing is though, it makes perfect sense to use females in certain contexts. For example, scientific or statistical. “Females are more likely to do X than males.” Or when you want to signal that you’re talking about women/girls as a group or men/boys as a group, so you use females or males collectively.

I totally get what you mean about the dudes and bros thing though. It’s like they (the ones who do that) think we’re all like, meatheaded cavemanish frat boys or something. Which isn’t surprising, honestly. It fits in with the rest of the “men are monsters women are sophisticated angels” paradigm of feminism.

Edit: “Dude” or “Bro” is like the new equivalent of “broad” “dame” “chick” “skirt” etc.

Those responses are clueless. Being a nerd didn't become socially acceptable until roughly around the turn of the century. I grew up in the 80s, and nerdy interests were absolutely a reason that us nerds got picked on and ostracized.

Even in the early 2000's I was picked on for bring into D&D and shit like that. My mom even took my first set of D&D rulebooks because she thought they'd turn me to devil worship (still playing D&D, still happily a Christian). As recently as 2018 I had a student ask me how to deal with being picked on for being into nerdy stuff. Kids are assholes.

Please stop using the word gaslighting when it doesn't apply. All it will mean soon is "an opinion I disagree with."

Ok but I do think that this particular thing counts as that. Searched for the definition of it and copy pasting it here -

“Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse in which a person or group causes someone to question their own sanity, memories, or perception of reality”

The person is saying that nerdy interests were “always” cool. This can be said to make someone question their memories

I missed this earlier, but this needed to be removed due to rule 2. Please redact identifying information from social media screenshots.
