The men who say it feel disposable. Their feelings are real and my belief in their validity is only a mental exercise, but in that context I can see how some men feel like society sees them as disposable, or certainly as something less than valuable.

Can’t keep men in the manosphere if they’re happy. You have to keep them feeling shitty and uncertain about themselves so they keep coming back and asking for and paying for advice.

The amount of times I’ve seen men reference Rollo’s book is sad. Totally oblivious to the fact that they’re being used and manipulated. I guess they don’t care as long as the people who are manipulating them make them felt good about themselves and absolve them of any responsibilities.

I don't think it's only a narrative that any gender is disposable, it comes from how many societies seem to treat its citizens, how friends don't care about you beyond what you can provide, how families care more about their image than you getting the support you need in a time of struggles. afaik this is wide spread and affects both genders but maybe men slightly more in some ways.

We humans give ourselves the value we're treated with, right? It's hard to think that anyone is whatever the opposite of disposable is, to some extent, in this society.

When I’ve heard of descriptions of men being disposable, I don’t think it was a statement of preference rather an observation. So I wouldn’t say that would make someone saying that “horrible.” But yeah, no one has much sympathy for a guy who won’t get a job and I think not having a job has a huge negative effects on a guy.

Is this being said in the context of dating or as a general statement? Outside of FDS, I have not seen this being said often. As you say, most people are needed by their families, so there is that. But there is a difference between needed and wanted. As a man, I feel needed. But if I'm being honest to myself, I don't think anyone wants me. Not in the same sense that a woman is wanted by a man. But that's OK. There are more important things in life than being desired.

Expand on your thoughts. You say the men as being disposable narrative needs to stop, so offer an alternative that people who use the discourse haven't already offered.

I know its hard to hear, but it is a fact that men who are short, not conventionally attractive, overweight or neuroatypical are often bullied and society protects or excuses the bullying. When you feel nobody cares and you have nothing to lose, you become a danger to yourself and others.

It starts with changing how we talk to people who are different and treat them. Men don't feel safe in certain spaces because of rhetoric that makes them feel like they posess a level of oppressive power that they don't. Some of these men read all about how men need to do X Y or Z, but then when they do they feel like the goal post has moved*. When men call out for help they're told that nobody owes them anything or that they should stop being entitled, in an attempt to use a feminist lense, ironically some people end up reinforcing toxic masculinity and making these men regret being vulnerable. Often times the loudest voices on gender discourse are traumatized individuals. Whether its traumatized women talking about 'men' when they are really talking about the men they've encountered. Or traumatized men talking about 'women' when they are really talking about the women they've personally encountered. You have traumatized people making generalizations and its not helpful.

*see the discourse on nice guys and men who put other people's needs above their own constantly and end up overlooked in dating or in abusive relationships without their abuse being recognized for what it is.

I think there's room, on a species level, to suggest that males are comparatively disposable. Afterall, when we look at other species, it's typically the females that are camouflaged (ie: designed to maximize survival) while the males tend to be the opposite. There is a massive imbalance between the value of a sperm, and the value of an egg - one is in essentially limitless supply, while the other is comparatively scarce. It's not that men are disposable per-say, it's more that on a evolutionary level, the species can afford to lose more men than women. That's not to say it should apply socially, this isn't an appeal to nature as a good thing - but just to say it's more than a purely cultural trope, it is in fact part of our biological origins.
