One of my biggest fears.

I've had men try to convince me to live traditionally (stay at home wife and mother while he works) I say hell no to that. Too much risk. He makes enough to afford the women he really wants? Nah dude I'll break my back at my blue collar job than put that kind of faith in anyone.

I've seen that happen too often. The women in my family doing everything they were told they're supposed to in order to be a good wife and that man just destroyed her, the kids... everybody. It happened out of no where.

Hypergamy isn't just about money it's dating up. Youth and beauty is a supposed woman's social currency just like wealth and power is a man's supposed social currency. So in a way men practice Hypergamy but differently. And honestly, none of this serves any one. It's devastating no matter how you slice it.

My husband didn't grow up with the trauma I did so he doesn't understand why I'm more willing to work at a job I hate than to have him provide for me. We've had full blown arguments over my need to be totally independent from him. I love him dearly but I can't end up like the women in my family. I just I can't let that shit happen to me.

Hypergamy goes both ways. Men/women both have an instinctual desire to be with the best mate possible. With women, if they’re in a marriage with a man who they don’t feel is the best they can do given the value they have (looks, personality, etc), then they will find another man. The quora story is an example of a man who felt like he could do better than the woman he was with and unfortunately decided to cheat. Hypergamy is very much a real phenomenon, both for men and for women.

It makes sense because if a person is unhappy they will seek happiness by either finding an out (moving on, branch seining, cutting ties) or creating one through dissociation of self, delusion (fantasizing about life with others) or acceptance of the status quo also known as living on auto pilot or letting yourself go.
