My ex boyfriend kept telling me that my mindset makes the excruciating pain worse. Have I tried just not expecting pain?
[–]Elegant-StopFDS Newbie182 points183 points184 points 3 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
I hate when men think we have a low pain tolerance
[–]muniherbsFDS Newbie[S] 202 points203 points204 points 3 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link
Yeah and they’re the ones who chickened out of men’s birth control because of the discomfort and pain THEY were experiencing.
[–]PahapanFDS Disciple105 points106 points107 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I was so enraged when I read about how they'd developed a really promising birth control method for men but that it would probably never get any traction because men are fucking cowards. They can inject a polymer into the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles, thus blocking the sperm from leaving the tubes. It's permanent until another injection is administered that breaks down the gel. After the injection there should be no long lasting pain and there are no hormonal side effects.
In order to get my IUD I had to be splayed open with a speculum, my cervix had to be clamped to prevent it slipping around, my uterus had to be sounded with a measuring device, and then of course they had to actually insert the IUD. And it's going to take up to 6 months for it to settle in, during which time I'm going to bleed unpredictably and experience cramps. "That's what ibuprofen is for!" My (male) doctor cheerily told me. As if taking ibuprofen for extended periods of time isn't associated with any adverse effects.
But men can't handle one little fucking injection. Fucking cowards.
[–]vermintyFDS Newbie27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Oh God, having my IUD put in was the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life. Luckily I had decided to take the day off of work (I almost didn't). It felt like my lower back had shattered, I almost passed out while walking to the doors and then again after sitting down in my car. I didn't learn until months later that you can request an abortion pill prior to having the IUD placed or taken out to help soften your cervix.
[–]PahapanFDS Disciple20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
I'd just had an abortion the month before and I'd read that can knock your cycle off track, for obvious reasons. I read that getting your IUD inserted during your period can be the easiest route since your cervix is lowered and already open, but I had no way anymore to know when I'd be getting my next period in order to schedule for it. Thankfully my period hit a couple days before the appointment. I think that helped a lot (along with anesthetic injections) so it wasn't super painful for me. But I remember laying there, feet in the stirrups, having the speculum inserted, and thinking about how likely no man would ever go through something so invasive just for birth control.
Did your doctor give you any local anesthetic injections in your cervix? Mine mentioned that not every doctor does the anesthetic injections because they don't think it's necessary. I've heard a lot of IUD insertion/removal horror stories and I wonder how much of that is because some doctors are just straight up sadistic assholes.
[–]vermintyFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
What the actual fuck, they can give anesthetic injections!? That was never offered to me...
[–]PahapanFDS Disciple6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yes! I'm sorry you had to go through that without being numbed first. The doctor who placed your IUD should have their license revoked.
[–]vermintyFDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And these men will never have to endure labor, not to mention invasive cervical checks during labor. The cervical checks were almost worse than pushing him out, but god forbid a guy experiences a bit of discomfort.

[–]Elegant-StopFDS Newbie117 points118 points119 points 3 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
No physical pain in my entire life has ever compared with my cramps. It is absolutely excruciating and it happens every month. I burned myself with a heating pad because the sensation of my skin literally burning wasn’t registering compared to the pain of the cramps.
Edit: for all you experiencing horrific cramps, ask your doctor for Mefenamic Acid. It has been a godsend. One pill and I can avoid cramps that month.
[–]PahapanFDS Disciple35 points36 points37 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
When I was young (started getting my period at 10) I was too embarrassed to ask my parents to get pain killer so if there was none in the house I'd sometimes turn to self harm to distract from the pain of my cramps. I think it's a form of counterstimulation? Your brain will turn its attention towards the new pain so you get some relief from the preexisting pain. They both hurt but they hurt differently, so it was still a relief. Really painful period cramps are indescribable.
It would be amazing if some very brave woman out there who's experienced awful cramps would go through the Schmidt sting pain index and rank her experience with cramps among the stings. I think men would be shocked. Not that they'd actually believe her.
[–]bisantiFDS Newbie10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Wow I felt this. Happens all the time. Like you know it's bad when your skin literally burning is less painful. Men would literally mandate a week off from work if they had to deal with what we do.

I do kickboxing fights. I have had broken bones and kept on fighting. I have been stitched in cold blood (no anaesthesia) close to my eye. I have had liver shots (the worse pain!) and kept on going.
Some weeks ago I went running with 3 teammates, in the middle of the fucking run my period pains came out, and we had to stop because I started vomiting.
99% of scrotes couldn't even carry on with a broken bone, much less period pains. Fuck. Them.

I birthed a whole ass human, and some days period cramps are comparable. Until a man births a child and bleeds regularly for most of his life, he will have no say on how I experience those pains.

My excruciating period pain never came back after I gave birth. Occasionally it will be bad enough to disrupt my sleep, but nothing like it was before. I get it every three weeks now instead of four and now I'm just waiting on menopause to give me relief 😆
[–]PahapanFDS Disciple26 points27 points28 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I like how menopause gets painted in popular culture as this super unfortunate thing all us women have to go through. I for one can't fucking wait to be released from this biological imperative to reproduce. I also look forward to most men having zero sexual desire for me and hopefully leaving me the fuck alone. Women are most likely to reach peak happiness at 85 years old (according to a survey by the NHS) yet I'm supposed to dread hitting menopause and getting old? Okay.
[–]penelopekittyFDS STRATEGY COACH14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I've just completed menopause. I didn't have any real issues and now I'm period free. It's fantastic. It's also great not having to deal with hormonal fluctuations affecting your mood and appetite. Oh, and I get better results from my workouts too.
[–]notbasic4karenFDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That’s awesome...that’s how I felt when I was breastfeeding and therefore wasn’t getting a period every month. I have PMDD so the week before, I’m literally suicidal, and then there’s the lovely week where I’m bleeding, so basically it was freedom for about a year before my period came back.

[–]timetofliptablesFDS Newbie29 points30 points31 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yep. Hysteria is no longer a diagnosis but that doesn’t mean doctors still don’t have that sort of mindset about women. Even other women.
I went to a female doctor, a friends mom, hoping I’d be listened to and taken seriously and she was one of the worst ones. Ended up sobbing in her office and everyone just ignored me.
[–]Elegant-StopFDS Newbie26 points27 points28 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I had intense vertigo for months and when it first started it was so intense that I had to physically concentrate on not fainting and I couldn’t sleep because I was so dizzy I couldn’t close my eyes and the feeling of being tired felt like my body was forcing me to faint. I went to a male doctor and he said “young ladies tend to feel faint”. HE BASICALLY DIAGNOSED ME WITH WOMEN SICKNESS??? Got it corrected when my usual female doctor ordered extensive testing 🙄
[–]PahapanFDS Disciple8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]DCPoisonIvyFDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
No! I got my blood tested and my ear/nose/throat several times! Final step was a scan on my brain, then it slowly went away over several months. As a side note, when I met with the neurologist (man) as I was walking out of the appointment he asked if I was anorexic. Thank you sir but that isn’t even your job and no, just a fast metabolism!

I don’t personally experience difficult period pain but I would never accuse another woman of exaggerating it. This scrote who doesn’t even have a uterus is basing this assumption on what exactly?
His hatred of women I’m assuming.
[–]localgirlcultFDS Newbie32 points33 points34 points 3 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link
All I experience is lower back pressure which doesn't exactly hurt, or maybe I'd call it a weird sort of dull "pain". More than anything, it's very uncomfortable and I can make it go away for the day with literally one pain pill. There are women who throw up, can't get up or even faint from how bad it is for them. It's a blessing when some piece of shit says something like this out loud. At least you know to block and delete from your life. I will not let any of them explain us TO US.
[–]seraphinelysionFDS Apprentice40 points41 points42 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I am assuming he thinks that since not all women experience excruciating period pains, that the ones who claim to are therefore "exaggerating". It's almost as if he believes all women are the same and aren't individual people. Imagine having such a low IQ as to not have any common sense. I can't fathom that.

[–]ninetiesbaby16FDS Apprentice17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I get it really bad, like I’ve never had a baby but I wouldn’t be surprised if labor contractions are similar to my period cramps, and I hope that’s not minimizing what mothers go through. Like I’m on the verge of passing out and all I can do is writhe on my bed in pain. If I take ibuprofen BEFORE cramps start I’ll be ok, but once they’ve started painkillers do nothing. So I have to track carefully and take ibuprofen in the days leading up to my period which can’t be good for me 😓
[–]sellingoutstradiumsFDS Newbie5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Apparently taking pain killers frequently can cause liver damage... All this just for the possibility of having a child :(
[–]littlestarling123FDS Newbie10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Labor pains are actually very Similar but almost less painful because its purposeful pain if that makes sense. You know it will stop and its happening to get your baby here. My awful periodd totally prepared me for 9 hours of natural labor. I was like ok this is what it feels like? Cool. Ive got this.
[–]nawinter77FDS Newbie0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't know if you've a caffeine intake anything like mine, but since you are tracking, when you start you IB regimine you should decrease your caffeine intake: It can help lessen the severity of cramping. (For some... YMMV.)

Just a suggestion, I'd get that looked into (if you haven't already of course). We are so conditioned to accept excruciating pain and are experience dismissal health professionals that we find out too late that they were symptoms of other things.
Speaking from experience and now 15 years later (with wasted potential child rearing years) cue Hysterectomy in 3, 2, 1

If men got periods then menstrual products would suddenly become free and we'd all have days off of work or school for our period. An underwear stipend too.

They do get "man flu". We all saw a man turn into a capricious toddler whenever he has a cold. Can't believe we're the gender who never gets trusted about their pain.

My sister was in labor and our oldest brother was embarrassed by her screaming. He told her “it doesn’t hurt that bad”. She went full exorcist on him and banned him from the delivery room (he drove us to the hospital and her husband wasn’t able to get there yet). My brother has 7 kids with his wife. I felt so bad for her in that moment.

Interestingly enough, it was my now Husband who told me my period pains were NOT normal & said I needed to go to the doctor. He was very concerned & made me promise to go— even though I was convinced it was normal. It’s literally the only time he’s ever referenced his exes in comparison to me and he only did that because I was so convinced my pain level was normal.
Gynecologist suspected endometriosis and recommended an IUD— which has helped immensely. I haven’t had a period in 5 years; it’s been a life saver!

I'm lucky that my birth control has no discernible side effects and makes my periods actually tolerable. Other women can't say the same unfortunately, I hear time and time again just how bad of an experience that birth control can be. Our gender has the unfortunate responsibility of bearing your children, just shut the fuck up and get us some good chocolate.

I've heard men say depression doesn't exist, they say this because they've never experienced and so can't fathom it. Proof men are missing the ever so essential "empathy" emotion that's essential for emotional intelligence.
Oh, it exists for sure, but only when men want to derail a talk about female depression or suicide rate. Same as male victims when talking about women being raped.
Outside of those, it doesn't exist and men are the first to mock the ones suffering from it.

I was with someone while I was dealing with a fibroids tumor that made me basically bleed out and feel excruciating pain. It was incredibly inconvenient for him because I never stopped bleeding so sex was nonexistent or messy. Also my pain was probably no worse than that one time he “insert shitty comparison here”. He ended up breaking up with me because I didn’t pay him enough attention because I WAS ANEMIC AND DYING AND TIRED. A few months later I genuinely almost bled out and died (I’d been bleeding for almost 8 months and the blood wasn’t really clotting anymore and I was just purely expelling actual blood not period blood). I had to get 4 blood transfusions just to get to a post-baby level of anemia and then surgery to get the fibroid removed and then 2 more blood transfusions.
I realized him breaking up with me was the greatest thing that ever happened to me and I wasn’t going to take men’s shit any more or baby them.
If anyone tries to down play what you are feeling physically or emotionally then they are trash and don’t deserve to be in your life.

A good way to judge a man is to see how he reacts to your pain.
Does he want to help and make your pain lighter and is he concerned for you or is it an inconvenience and nuisance to him to the point he tried to invalidate that your pain even exists?
