A pickup artist tried this weird crap on me at a Starbucks once. I had a couple hours to kill and decided to go in an read a book while I sipped some coffee. The moment I sat down in the armchair, the older man next to me get my attention and starts striking up a convo. I was just a baby then so I decided to “be polite” and humor him. Then he started involving this other dude who was obviously as uncomfortable as me but also too polite to say otherwise. Eventually I decided to just read in my car so I made an excuse and started to pack up. He of course asked for my number which I said I didn’t give away to strangers, so then he asked for my email?? And I hastily scribbled down the wrong email lol. I was weirdly rattled after the encounter, like I’d just been manipulated or encountered a sociopath..

I think back on that day sometimes and am secure in the knowledge that if it happened now, I would firmly but politely tell him I was busy and uninterested in a conversation— and also to trust my gut when I feel that way about someone, because my brain is smarter than I am.

What’s the most cringe-worthy pick-up line a guy has ever tried on you? I think mine was when I was waitressing and a customer asked, “Do you take orders to go?” Me: “Yes.” Him: “Well then get your coat and let’s go!” Har har. PUA are disgusting.
