I told him I’m not interested in guys who enjoy negging and ended the convo.

Let's go, queen! 👑 I feel sick reading his messages.

If he hasn't offered to treat you dinner, I mean, why even bother?

I was on a date last week and he says “you’re kinda hot”. Lol. I replied “are you negging me?” He straightened up quick and said “No, not at all, no! you’re totally hot”.
Assholes. They know exactly what they are doing. Don’t let them get away with it.

Hah, I went out with some piece of shit who was super into RP and Game.
We were talking about tattoos. I only have one but it's in a clean script. And he said "looks like a kid scribbled on your arm." So I replied "Oh, negging me?" His jaw kind of dropped " Oh, you know what negging is?" Sure do d-bag.
And then he back peddled. What a tool.
Edit: and then he spent most of the rest of the date talking about game. 🙄

I experienced this and identified it, but I did not call him out on it. I just ignored it. I was at a party and I texted him that I was at a party and dancing. He responded something to the affect of 'probably dancing in circles.' I didn't know what he meant by that exactly, but it felt negative to me. After his comment, I simply said 'good night' although it was still early in the evening.
I felt like it was to my advantage if he didn't know that I knew his game. But, perhaps if I had called him out on it, it would have stopped him in his tracks.

Explain negging to me is that a narc tactic?
[–]SnowlampFDS Newbie38 points39 points40 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Yes, narc or pua... XKCD have a great cartoon on it here.
[–]redbirdfliesFDS Disciple52 points53 points54 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Narcs are particularly experienced in negging. They play an even more sophisticated game of emotional abuse. The negging is much less obvious and subtle. They also grant effusive compliments and love affirmations during the love bombing phase and when you move towards the discard phase they withhold any and all compliments and affection, which you’ve grown attached to by then. Before they begin the negging process and by the time the full blown negging (and sometimes much less subtle abuse) takes place, you’ve been conditioned to take almost whatever attention, good or bad, they give you, so you accept it and find yourself working hard to “earn” your former place and be in favor with the person who seemed to love and adore you so much just a month or two ago
It’s a sick head game. My ex was very adept at it. It sickens me to look back on what I accepted in that relationship.
[–]SnowlampFDS Newbie34 points35 points36 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Yep, I've been there. The way a narc doesn't do it at first is how I got caught out. Straight off the bat negging would not work on me... but after years of being a friend and 6 months of sleeping together.. then it got me. Oh how I bent over backwards trying to make myself good enough for him... a woman who earns more than 4 times what he does and he had me full of self doubt. Bloody ridiculous situation.
Even now, years later with no contact, the things he said still haunt me a bit .
[–]redbirdfliesFDS Disciple26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It’s psychological warfare. We literally have to reprogram ourselves to function normally in a relationship after being with a narc
Make no mistake, no matter what status you are in life, if your boundaries are weak, they can easily make us doubt our value and our sanity
We are no match for them. No one with a soul is a match for someone who lacks empathy. You can’t fight them, they will always win because they play dirty and have zero regrets about it. The only way to win is to walk away and heal the wounds that caused you to let such a soulless being in to begin with.
[–]SnowlampFDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Perfectly said.
Even now after years and therapy, tiny things trigger a flashback. Like the tone I assigned to his texts, if I ever hear that out and about or on a tv show I immediately feel dread. Pavlovian!

Heartbreaking. It’s such a traumatic experience

Ooo I just realized that some guy tried to do this to me. I never went very far in chasing him or seeking to re-earn his approval but it still made me feel like shit. Ugh! I hate that men do things like this to women.
[–]Parking-ActFDS Disciple8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
My ex did this to me!!! I just never knew what it was called! He was very covert. It wore down my self esteem and soon I was jumping through hoops to be good enough.

Many narcs will compliment you on your presence/authenticity/you are who you say you are/you say what you are thinking. I used to think "ya I'm an honest person who's confident" but they aren't used to it so they point it out like it's some rare thing
[–]CoolMelonadeRuthless Strategist78 points79 points80 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I really like your response about “disguised insults” lol
[–]Ms_TillyRuthless Strategist47 points48 points49 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Me too. Simple and to the point. I don't understand these men. Even if they aren't trying to neg, we aren't your bros. Have some damn class.
[–]mememe88888FDS Newbie16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Right! I called someone out on his underhand insults and called them for what they were. He said “oh, this is going to be fun. Are you sure we’re going to get along?” Lol 😂 not if you keep that shit up

This reminds me of a guy i talk to as well. Met him OLD but we kept having conversations instead of him ever asking me out, thankfully i met my current bf. I always used to wonder why conversations with him lowered my spirits before realising that there were a lot of hidden insults in them.

Today I was thinking about a comment a man made to me... we were talking about me being from Florida... he said a lot of places in Florida are trashy and poor... and he said “are you from one of the trashy and poor places?” 😂😂😂😂 wtf, my man, just wtf lol

[–]AnniaTFDS Disciple13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It really looks textbook negging. He has probably been reading PUA "literature" lmao
[–]LeolikesmeFDS Newbie1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Wonder how well it works for them. Yeah, cause we like being around people who make us feel bad.
[–]AnniaTFDS Disciple2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
We don't, but some women have this natural tendency of wanting to prove themselves to a man, of convince a man they're worthy of becoming "the one". So the more they're "negged", the more they'll pursue and try to convince these men otherwise. Which is why these PUA tricks only work mostly with insecure women and why insecure women are the main target of these men. They want to play with our insecurities. And this is also why these PUA idiots despise strong confident women who see through their BS and therefor reject them.
