My step dad pulls this shit all the time. I do help clean the dishes, and I always ask my mom if she needs help with dinner. Her usually is no with an occasional yes. But he’s always telling us “help your mom” as his ass is sitting on the couch for 5 hours straight doing nothing. He never cleans his mess up and claims “I work”. Okay? It doesn’t take you all day to clean your one dish you used or clean up the mess you made in the kitchen.

You just described my dad. He comes home from work and sits at his laptop watching stupid videos. I clean up dinner and he puts his plate in the CLEAN SINK when the dishwasher is RIGHT THERE! It would literally take an extra two seconds. Annoys me to no end.

If he is in his home he isn't "helping" - he is taking care for his home.

Just like he’s not “babysitting” his own kids. I hate that shit.

I see this as the father reminding the son that housework (which is probably what the mother is doing now) isn't only a woman's task. I see this as him raising his son better than how he was raised.
We remind children to do things so it becomes a habit, part of the routine, like telling them to wash their hands, brush their teeth, etc. They don't know better, so we have to tell them. Hopefully one day the teenagers are like "I usually help mum vacuum on Friday, she's out now, guess I'll just get started without her".

Lead by example imo.

Do both! Lead by example and verbally remind them afterwards.

Personally I couldn't bear that " Help your mother ". Because it shall not be the mother's duty, so she is not the one to be helped ( like it's not her dust, her cooking, her washing...it's the family's).
Even the simple fact to say " Please vacuum the living room." is way more of a real help, because at least it shows that you know what is needed to be done instead of adding in the already busy mother the task to assign a chore to the child .
And what's more, I can't figure out many situations when you can say " There is housework you have to do, but me not " to your kid, except for his bedroom of course !
