Now that's how ya do it. He had me ready to send him pics of my menstrual cup on a monthly basis. I don't compliment men often but kudos to him.

You beat me to it!

[–]eatchickpeasFDS Newbie 325 points326 points  (12 children) | Copy Link

i remember thinking very vividly when i got my first period at 11 about how this was one of the world's best kept secrets because you dont see or hear women get to talk about period openly. because vaginas are only for snoo snoo and cannot be shown with blood pouring out of it. they use blue liquids in the adverts not red, my culture especially makes women feel ashamed of their natural periods but would congratulate an old man for marrying girl whos 16

[–]peachesandkraut 75 points76 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

I thought I had cancer when my first period arrived. I didn’t tell anyone that I thought I was gonna die until my mom noticed it in my laundry and explained everything to me. I was not prepared at all

[–]eatchickpeasFDS Newbie 32 points33 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

same i wasnt prepared either. i thought i was dying lol

[–]One-Strength-5394Throwaway Account 8 points9 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm grateful that my mother prepared me (even though it is the job of a parent). I went to the toilet while at home, saw red, and immediately called my mom and she helped me through it with a more hands on experience. She had explained everything to me before then though. I remember being satisfied that that part of puberty was checked off the list but didn't know how much I'd grow to hate it. I had a few leak experiences while at school, which were a bit traumatizing. Especially with the school system being hesitant to let us go to the bathroom.

[–]gliese710comingatyou 76 points77 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

Gosh I’m Indian, same. My mother didn’t even tell me what the fuck it was and why it came. I felt an immense amount of shame for something I couldn’t control. I wish I’d taken out pads without having to be secretive at school and made all the noise.

[–]eatchickpeasFDS Newbie 83 points84 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

im sri lankan, my mum didnt tell me before but when it happened she told me about puberty and i was in shock. when a young girl goes through puberty theres this bathing ritual we do. its only done for young girls and not boys, you sit in a bathtub and get water poured on you whilst ur wearing a white dress or something

every family member in a 30 mile radius literally comes to your house for dinner the next day to discuss 'your plans for the future'. basically living room ebay auctions on young girls virginities, families then plan whos family she will marry into when shes of age. thankfully its dying out but i knew a few girls who had to endure this and this was in south london, a very modern western city

[–]SouthernbelllleFDS Newbie 23 points24 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

My God!! I used to flush the toilet, run the sink, and the tub trying to drown it out, but that wrapper was still so ducking loud!! 😩😤

[–]CloacaDiddlerFDS Disciple 19 points20 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

So, we had small dogs, and when one of the older males got incontinent we fashioned him a tiny diaper with a feminine hygiene pad. I was used to seeing that. However, when I got my period at 9, (and only told my mom after quite some time because I kept spotting weirdly and waking up with wet sheets and thought I was like having accidents at night or something) she dug under the bathroom sink wayyy past the literal box of pads we used for the dog, to the double layered garbage bag wrapped identical box of pads we apparently had for the human inhabitants of the house. And every time we had to buy more we specified “for the dog!!!” and hid them under coats or rushed them past any other relatives.

At the stable I ride at is this 10 year old girl who easily talks about periods, knows what they are, and feels comfortable asking questions to the older women who give sage advice and also tell her not to be ashamed or afraid of it. It’s a marvel to me, and I’m so glad for her.

[–]eveisobelleFDS Newbie 19 points20 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

honestly ! i remember feeling so awful and strange when i first got it and walking around looking at all the women around me in disbelief that they’ve all been through the same thing

[–]ItsFreezenFDS Newbie 137 points138 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

You got me lol

[–]sabiwagsFDS Newbie 43 points44 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I was reeaallly hoping this was a troll. Thank god. I like that he made an attempt to comment on systematic racism (although the situation is much more nuanced/complex than that, as periods are natural whereas systemic racism is n o t)

[–]MadamLeFayFDS Newbie 102 points103 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I know I can't be the only one making the same faces as those women!

[–]MuffcakelordFDS Disciple 29 points30 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

I mean, this is satire and it's kind of obvious but it's only because he doesn't use the actual tactics men use in real life, which is trying to make it sound more mystic and scientific or something.

Men everywhere, and it's not even that few, will say mensturation is a sign of unhealthy lifestyles and claim that women can choose to quit having menses if they just quit eating carbs. Men will claim menses is about a table spoon of blood for a day every month. They will claim women know exactly when they will bleed and that they can hold it in like pee. And these men are so common they're often found in critical, important political roles where they have actual influence on laws and taxes regarding women.

The point about racism is really good but it should remind us that men really are out there saying the same words as this dude, but unironically and so vaguely and coated in bullshit that it's sometimes hard to catch

[–]minkeyayeFDS Newbie 6 points7 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, you can choose to lose your period by quitting carbs... and lowering your body fat percentage to an unhealthy level so your body goes into crisis and ceases normal functions.

Yeah I also heard about "a tribe in Africa" whose women hold their periods in with their muscles 🙄 no mention of the name of that tribe or anything

[–]ProtoetypeFDS Newbie 40 points41 points  (4 children) | Copy Link

I take photos on my phone of the gore globs that I give birth to on toilet paper when I'm on my period to send to men that insult me or send me unsolicited dick pics.

Assault their eyes right back, ladies.

[–]glowmilkFDS Newbie 48 points49 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Wow lmao, I’m so used to men constantly denying women’s experiences that I really wasn’t expecting this to go the way it did 😮

[–]Beginning_Note_21 16 points17 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Girl. Me either.

[–]NeroReignsAll 8 points9 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow, what a turnaround. Did not expect that twist.

[–]breadandbunnyFDS Newbie 9 points10 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

That was gold! He very accurately demonstrated the mentality that many people have. "It has never happened to me, so it must not be true!" Yeah, I've never been shot in the face. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen to people.

[–]anotherdamnloserFDS Newbie 26 points27 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh yeah I was about to go find this dude LOL

[–]myeggsarebigFDS Newbie 27 points28 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]NoodleEmpressFDS Newbie 8 points9 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh god, I was genuinely getting scared because I've had a guy say this to me, and he was SERIOUS.

Like he was so incredulous that someone else other than his talk about this "mythical" bleeding that they spoke about often but for some reason still didn't believe because he didn't see it??

[–]Blackrose_FDS Newbie 15 points16 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

You had me going in the first part ngl....

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

I was about to yeet that boy into the SUN until he explained the ending! HOY VEY! That was an emotional roller coaster.

“I’ve never seen their genitals bleed”

I wonder why he hadn’t seen genitalia 🤔

But lol he had me in the first half

[–]fdskylieThrowaway Account 40 points41 points  (10 children) | Copy Link

I think this is a bad example because periods are physical. A better example would have been to compare it to people who say their friends could not possibly be rapists/abusers because they personally have not been abused by them, or he could have said that depression does not exist because you might not see/experience it yourself.

But either way this is a false equivalency. Denying systemic racism is comparable to denying systemic sexism.

[–]TigreImpossibileFDS Apprentice 14 points15 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

I actually think it's a better example to make a point, because yes, you're right, people do deny systemic sexism exists, but if he used that example, they would just agree with the first part of the video and the point would NOT be made.

[–]heziedFDS Newbie 12 points13 points  (3 children) | Copy Link

Also saying a bunch of sexist things and then saying "thats how ridiculous racism is!" makes it seem like he is ignorant of how often we have to deal with genuinely misogynistic men who act like this.

[–]burpleseaurchinPickmeisha™️ 4 points5 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

You hit the nail right on the head. This is why I don't like this video & why the comments are full of people who think he was serious at first. It's honestly not that uncommon and very believable that he would be that sexist, when his point is it's ridiculous to be that sexist.

[–]fdskylieThrowaway Account 3 points4 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you for saying that. This coming from him does not sit right with me but I have not been feeling very articulate recently.

[–]shockingupdateFDS Newbie 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]daisy_0720FDS Disciple 1 point2 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]afrodeasyakFDS Newbie 2 points3 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Hikari3747FDS Newbie 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

Damn he got me good. I was about to say, yeah maybe people from incest relationships don't bleed because of Inbreeding; but normal healthy women do have periods.
