Some girls in a class I was in complained that the school uniform was sexist as it didn’t let girls wear tank tops, with small straps. This never really got enforced to my knowledge. Guys on the other hand had to wear suits and ties, top button done up, shirt tucked in. This was heavily enforced. I really don’t get their point.

Wait. So guys had to be in full suit & tie. And girls could be in spaghetti strap tank tops and I assume miniskirts? The skirt vs pant thing is normal, but I though uniformed schools enforced blazers & dress shirts for everyone. Looks like I was wrong.
(I always went to public schools in Canada where there are no uniforms)

Well, the dress code for the girls was more just ‘smart clothes’, compared to ‘suit and tie’ for guys. I’ll say I can’t remember seeing any girl in a miniskirt, though I remember a fair amount of girls wearing thin strapped tank tops and they were seemingly moderated loosely.

I guess that is the issue when you create dress codes and make them vague like "smart clothes". It could mean anything. But of course if you make dress condes specific for women, they complain that it is mysoginstic to tell women what to where. Can never win with them.
Men dress formally all the time; it is not hard for women to do the same. (But of course it is women who face barriers in the workplace /s)

One element of Title vii, workplace discrimination, is that a company cannot dictate what is appropriate female dress code. Ginsburg invented this interpretation to allow women to wear pants to work.
I always wondered what would happen if men started showing up in blouses and skirts. You can bet the law would be reinterpreted before you can say "feminism is about equality".

In Ontario, where I live, the Human Rights Tribunal has two specific rules on dress codes vis-a-vis gender:
That's it. Different dress codes for Men and Women are otherwise allowed provided they are "reasonable" and serve a "bona fide' business purpose.
s that a company cannot dictate was is appropriate female dress code.
That aspect I find concerning. That female dress codes are just prohibited full stop

In the US, it's about "gender stereotyping". One cannot gender stereotype to determine a dress code based on gender.
Hence why men can sue if not allowed to come to work in sleeveless low cut blouses.

I worked a job where a bunch of women were complaining about the restrictions on sandles vs flip flops, etc. I was required to wear a tie.
I told them, you realize that as a man required to wear a tie I'm basically only allowed to let air get to my head and hands? Since there's no such thing as a "short sleeve dress shirt" I was basically looking at a very puritanical wardrobe. Women have pretty versatile options when it comes to work clothes....

What was their response to that?
I had this line of discussion with my old supervisor at one time. She is a Feminist but to her credit she agreed that there is a problem that I was in a long sleeve dress shirt & dress pants and she was in a T-Shirt and capris. I guess where she and I differed was that I felt that women should be required to dress more formally while she felt that men should be allowed to dress more casually
[–]macrolinx14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
they basically just stopped complaining about it around me. lol
I guess it really all depends on your environment and job as for whether women should be coming up to meet you or you going down to them. (in terms of professional dress)
I'm in IT. I do so much field work now that no one gives a damn what I'm wearing. And I mean outdoor field work, not just visiting remote sites to fix stuff. I'm under buildings, in overhead spaces, etc.

If they want equality they should also use a full suit with tie like man.
[–]Rad_Knight48 points49 points50 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
And women then complain that they are cold.

As someone that works in the financial industry I can tell you this is 100% truth. Doesn't matter what role you're in you wear a suit and tie if you're a guy. Women showing up in whatever they want. You also get older women whispering in your ear "I love a good man in a suit" but could you imagine if I went around whispering to girls "I love a good girl in a skirt" or something.

The places I work don't require men to wear suits, but button up shirts and slacks/jeans are the norm. However, the women seem to think it's totally appropriate to wear camel-toe revealing yoga pants. Like, if I just wore my boxer-briefs I'm pretty sure I'd be fired.

Same where I have worked. I admit that this was a slight exageration

I remember when I used to work at the IT department of a chemistry company and it was strictly forbid to wear sandals and women used to wear sandals with any problems.

Men abide by strict dress codes and don’t complain
Women: Omg why do I have to wear make up!? These 9 inch stilettos are killing me!! (Even though no one told her to wear tall heels) CHANGE THE DRESS CODE FOR WOMEN NOW!!

ngl if I don't sweat the moment I put on a suit I'd probably be okay looking like that dude going to school

I don't know what to say. I work as a Computer Scientist and I like to go to my job wearing a suit. My colleagues (men & women) use to go very casual.
[–]Matt_the_Alien-4 points-3 points-2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This is kinda not true. Some jobs let you wear different things, I work in graphics and vinyl installation, so a t shirt and shorts with comfortable shoes is completely acceptable considering I will be working inside and outside in the summer. This may apply else wear but honestly I’ve never seen it in the 15 jobs I’ve had in my life. Dress how you want and don’t complain about others choices.
[–]throwawayincelacc2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It wasn't meant to be reflective of every job ever. Does a construction job expect a suit and tie every day? No of course not. But I can sure as hell tell you that guy from accounting that sits in a cubicle all day is still expected to be in a suit 100% of the time.
The point is more that everyone should just be able to dress in ways that are comfortable and not extremely costly. Buying new suits, having them fit and then constantly dry cleaning them is quite expensive versus women being able to just put on normal clothes every day.

I would not pick this specific hill to die on fellas.
Now she might be wearing yoga pants and a t-shirt, but she also has a 30 min makeup routine.
