Edit: There is a lot of misreading of my intentions with this thread, so I’ll start by making those clear. I don’t actually believe feminism is inherently against democracy. I am not trying to convince you that feminists are looking to steal the election in your countries. The purpose of this discussion is to explore the the possible ways feminist authoritarianism can potentially evolve if they hold power in a democracy, and the democracy isn’t voting according to their plan. I’m not a prophet trying to predict future, I am merely asking? Could his happen? Is this already happening? And if so, how? So far the responses have been quite fruitful.

If we look at common feminist principles, they would look at a country like the US and say “The US is in the grip of the patriarchy. You can tell this is true, because see how most positions of power are held by men? Well that’s patriarchy.”

Setting aside the private sector a moment. It is true that all US presidents and most sitting senators are in fact men. They were also democratically elected by an electorate that includes the women. The argument from feminists is that the problem of patriarchy has not been fixed until all sitting positions of power are 50% women, and so, their goal is to see to it that this happens. The goal of democracy however, is to put people in power who received the most votes. However, the “correct” answer for feminists is for power to be equally divided among men and women (or let’s be real, unbalanced in favor of women), and so if the electorate votes for mostly men, then the people are wrong.

So according to feminists, the patriarchy is responsible for putting mostly men in power, right? But if it’s people who are ultimately doing the voting, and if we don’t vote the way feminists want, then we the people suddenly become the patriarchy, and we go from “let’s smash the system” to “let’s smash the people who don’t think like me.”

I’m not jumping on the voter fraud hysteria bandwagon of the American right wing, I’m not saying feminists are literally defrauding elections. However I have to wonder… At the moment it seems like feminism is on board with democracy as long as it gets them in power, but what if it doesn’t? What if the only thing that stood in their way was a fair voting system?
