More male disposability in The Guardian

This article covers a new UK study showing amongst other things that about 7% of UK children have attempted suicide by age 17. The figures appear to show, on my cursory analysis, that self harm and suicide attempts are higher among girls than boys, which surprisingly for The Graun it doesn't go heavy on, and there's even a photo of a boy illustrating the article. But the shocker for me was this quote:

In the UK, suicide rates among young people have been increasing in recent years. The suicide rate for young females is now at its highest rate on record.

Going to the link attached https://media.samaritans.org/documents/SamaritansSuicideStatsReport_2019_Full_report.pdf

I see the actual figures and in 2017 for 15-19 year olds deaths per 100,000, males 7.6, females 3.5. So males over twice as many deaths. In 2018 males 9.0, females 4,4. So male rate again more than twice females, male rate has increased by 1.4, female by 0.9. But the way The Guardian presents this is young females rate is the highest on record. They literally do believe that women's lives are worth more than men's. It's pure psychopathy. But of course most people won't read the link. The suicide statistics listed there are shocking for men at all ages. Overall figure for 2018 deaths per 100,000 was males 17.2, females 5.4. Imagine the headlines in The Guardian if the figures were the other way round.

Well, we are talking about The Guardian. The best thing you can do is not expect a lot from The Guardian.

[–]Driftlight[S] 26 points27 points  (12 children) | Copy Link

This is true, but as someone living in the UK its influence on left/liberal discourse here is depressingly large. And ever since Katherine Viner took over as editor it has just degenerated into a third wave feminist woke shitshow. It was once a readable newspaper that published some decent investigative journalism.

It’s purely a liberal paper now. (and always has been) It’s almost totally discredited on the left.

[–]Driftlight[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

This is true but it's the only UK daily broadsheet paper that is supposedly left of centre at least. And it's become a nest of misandry and women are wonderfulism under Viner. To many people someone like Owen Jones is the face of the left in the UK and he's in the Guardian every day. Novara Media, the voice of the Corbynite/Momentum left will have Jones or Ellie May O'Hagen on their show and never call out the paper that they work for.

I have started a policy of not looking at The Guardian site as it does genuinely damage my mental health with its literal trolling of men, amongst some passable news coverage. It is a valuable window into the workings of the current female upper class elite though. It's instructive to see how pushing third wave intersectional patriarchy guff runs in parallel with actively sabotaging Corbyn or Bernie Sanders while promoting Biden, Harris, Starmer etc.

Supposedly, but not actually left of centre. That was the point I wanted to make because portraying the Guardian as left wing when it’s a centre right neoliberal propaganda outlet that attacks the left would discredit the left wing. Which is why I wanted to clarify.

Liberals are a large part of the left...

[–]Keown14 0 points1 point  (5 children) | Copy Link

But Liberals are not left wing.

[–]a-man-from-earthleft-wing male advocate 0 points1 point  (4 children) | Copy Link

Liberalism is the original left wing from way back in the times of the French Revolution.

And people downvoting me should really read our mission statement, to understand how we use these terms here.

Liberals in 2021 defend the status quo and are staunchly pro-capitalist and anti socialist.

They attack and attempt to destroy left wing movements while preaching bipartisanship with the right.

Basing your characterisations on the country of France centuries ago is not very useful. Your definitions on this sub also ignore economic systems which allows this flawed terminology to discredit the left.

One of the most common lies that the far right tells is when it lumps liberals and socialists together as “the left”. It’s a deliberate smear against the left. I’m not really surprised to see people doing the same sinister crap here. This sub is not trustworthy at all.

That's an oversimplification based on the corrupt system in the US.

[–]Keown14 1 point2 points  (1 child) | Copy Link

Nope. It holds for pretty much every modern nation. Neoliberalism is dominant in most of the world.

I’m not American btw.

The fact you think historical France is more relevant than the current situation we are living in is very suspect to be honest.

Creepy.

The only people I hear referring to Classical Liberalism and lumping Liberals in with the left are the far right. It’s a meme at this point.

I don't think it's more relevant. But being aware of the history is a good starting point.

And the social-liberal and social-democrat movements are an important part of the left, at least in Europe. And no, they do not "defend the status quo". Countries like Denmark, the Netherlands, and Finland are as progressive as they are largely thanks to these movements. Of course, there remains a lot of work to be done.

The guardian was also caught spreading pro-war propaganda at the behest of MI6. They are about as left-wing as the Democratic Party in the USA.

woke is all they got left.

The Guardian is tripe and has been for at least a decade in my eyes. Left leaning in the UK? Ha, you better be a fucking idiot to lap up what they offer. I am frankly shocked that the Daily Mail has more to offer in terms of men's rights, at god they have some right trash on there too.

This is what fake news is, and it's the worst kind because it's deceptive. It's one side of the truth, the one that fits the narrative Guardian readers are used to.

[–]Alataire 6 points7 points  (0 children) | Copy Link

It's probably the highest for women between 15-19 year old ever, and simultaneously lower than the lowest for men between 15-19 ever. However putting that second part in there takes up too much valuable words, especially since nobody cares about "privileged" men.

You'll find more naked misandry in the opinion section of the Guardian than you will on the 'Jezebel' blog.

This is incredibly high.

I fucking hate how the world hates me. Would I become anything other than nihilist?

[–]Blauwpetjevalued LWMA contributor 0 points1 point  (0 children) | Copy Link

This happens all the time. It's always 'girls' suicides increasing' and never 'boys' suicides still twice as high'. I think HuffPost (though it may have been another medium) did something similar some years ago.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
