In the whole abortion debate, I have heard this argument again and again from self-described feminists: “The abortion argument should be decided by women! Men shouldn’t get to do women what to do with their bodies!” Well, looks like they got their wish, as Amy Barett is one of the deciding votes on the Supreme Court in favour of banning abortion.

I have always hated this argument for this very reason. The logic used here means that Bernie Sanders‘ opinion that abortion should be legal ought to be discarded while Amy Barett’s opinion that it should be outlawed should be given weight and listened to, solely due to their genitals/identity, which is of course what just happened.

The argument seems to assume that women and men are separate hiveminds: that all women agree that abortion should be legal and all men are plotting to strip them of that right. It’s an absurd way of looking at the world. Arguments in politics and elsewhere should be analysed based o their merits, not by who says them.

I personally am 100% in favour of abortion. Everyone deserves to have their bodily autonomy respected, especially considering foetuses do not feel pain in the same way as full grown living beings do, and forcing any living being to give birth is wrong.
