I’m from the Netherlands, went to school in the mid 00’s and a teacher here was fired because they went to far in “disciplining” a boy.

She was quite old and used to a different time, my dad actually went to the same school and stil has horror stories on how she beat him because he was left handed.

It depends where I suppose. I'm a bit older than you and violence by teachers was not allowed or tolerated except on rare occasions when I was in school (the occasional slap in the face).

Doesn't mean they weren't awful, but not in a physical manner.

I am so sorry to read you went through that abuse. Sitting on a kid like this is horrific. It really is making them feel their life is threatened, I can't imagine how much damage a learning environment like this must cause.

In India it's acceptable to beat the shit out of boys. But you can't lay a finger on a girl. Even in my own family i was beaten with belt and roller for not scoring good marks. But my sister was never touched.

But now that I am older and probably richer than my whole family combined. I make sure none of my cousin go through what I went through.

In my country (Singapore) at least, many authoritative figures in charge of kids/young men (think: teachers/superiors of conscripts in the army) are quite afraid of parents nowadays.

If I had a child (though I don’t want one in this climate), I would make them know that should their teacher cross the line, they should let me know, and I would ensure that said teacher would be sorry for doing so. Likewise with a male child and the army. In the army among us conscripts, some of us called that to “play the parent card”.

What you have described is grave traumatic abuse. It's still happening in some parts of the world but not everywhere.

I don't know about your place but where I live (India), it's permissible to abuse male children (both at home and at school) in the name of discipline. It used to be considerably worse in the past and the situation has improved quite a bit since then, or so I've heard.

Same age as you OP, and had teachers try to get physical with me until i made it very clear, lay hands on me I'll lay hands back. Then once said teachers got in shit for "assaulting a minor" they wised up pretty fuckin quick. One of my last suspensions from high school a teacher tried to get physical and i gave the clear warning "you put your hands on me, and i will lay you out, then have you charged with assault. Get out of my way."

To put this in context (cause it reads like r/iamverybadass) i was late for class with an exam that day and NEEDED to get there asap. No hands were thrown, but that "threat" made them send the school cop to my class to collect me.

In the UK, teachers are not allowed to use corporal punishment as a method of disciplining students and any teacher found to have engaged in physical abuse of students would almost certainly be struck off and would very likely find themselves the subject of legal action.

It is, however, still legal in the UK for parents to hit their children as punishment providing no implements are used to inflict the punishment and the skin is not marked. I cannot say whether or not male children or more likely than female children to be the recipients of physical punishments from parents. Perhaps a more informed person could enlighten us on this.

That depends on where you live. Most 'Western' countries these days have gone so far away from disciplining children that it is becoming a problem in itself.

There is a balance between the abuse you suffered and never touching, or even telling off, a child. Unfortunately, few countries seem to settle with that balance, instead going from one extreme to the other, to the point that teachers start to mention abuse from children as a reason for packing in the job.

I know it is hard to define what is 'necessary' and what is 'abuse'. Personally, I think the question "What is the best way to treat this child so that they grow up into a healthy, educated person?" The answer is likely to differ between children, as most parents of more than one child knows.
