My ex brother in law did this when divorcing my sister (which he initiated). He's handicapped due to a brain tumor, but has found some low-paid online work. He can't do much else. He could never drive to a regular job or work 40 hours. My sister makes way more money than he as an engineer. My ex brother in law said he just needed to live comfortably and asked for enough alimony to supplement his income enough that he could afford a one-bedroom apartment. My sister's lawyer took one look at his proposal and told her, “This is insanely generous – sign it immediately.” He said he could have taken her for much, much more.
My ex sister in-law handled things much, much differently. She supposedly loved my brother (a well-paid FedEx pilot). He paid her way through med school. When he was away on trips, she screwed around on him with multiple lovers, catching and giving him the clap. He loved her and forgave her, and then she went back to doing it again. She humped around on him and ran up huge credit card debt buying clothes, shoes, expensive furniture, and God knows what other crap she didn't need. When he was out of town, she spent his money on vacations to Tahiti with her lover, brazenly paying for it with their joint credit card. Soon as she was done with med school, she divorced him, took the house, as much alimony as her lawyer could gouge, and ran off with one of her many lovers. She is now a doctor (scary thought) in another state and is on husband number 5.
A little different, eh?
