Japan knows what's up. They keep women out of the field because it costs millions to train them, they work a few years, marry and never practice medicine again at the same rates as men. It's the definition of a bad investment
" It is true that female physicians tend to leave the profession at much higher rates than their male counterparts (particularly when they become mothers), but many disagree that keeping them out of medical school is an appropriate or effective response."

That is why women go to college. Is why she goes through all the trouble through medical school. She really don’t give a shit about being a doctor. Want to get a leg up against her female competition to snag that high 10% income bracket doctor. Once she gets that kid with you, they will quickly drop down to part time or quit completely.
That is why they really dont care about the cost of education. Get the most expensive school because the future husband will pay for it.

That's because Japan (and East Asia in general) doesn't give a fuck about people's feelings or if something is "offensive". Only if it makes rational sense.

They were trying to keep the numbers even between the sexes. Women are 47-49% of medical school classes now. They are hardly being kept out of the field. What they did not want was women dominating the field as they tend not to get PhDs, and basic research is the lifeblood of universities. Universities want as many PhD candidates as possible from each graduating class. It is not true that they quit when they marry, after the hell medical students go through, very few actually completely quit the field. They tend to gravitate towards part time work, and certain specialities, such as ophthalmology, dermatology, and internal medicine where they won’t work overtime. This leaves surgical positions unfilled.

Dude what? It’s 2019 and you’re still talking about gender discrimination in the workplace? Also if you pushed a baby out I’m sure you’d want to take time off from work too. It’s not like women can give birth and then jump back up ready to go. It takes a crazy toll on women’s bodies. Like come on man. Also it’s less culturally accepted in Japan for women to work than in America. Less and less women are having children in the US since their careers are only taken seriously if they’re childless. It sucks too since men can have kids and can continue to work and women need time to recover.

Difference is that tool set is a liquid asset. A degree is not. I'd like to see her use that 400k piece of paper as downpayment, where as you toolset very well can be. Not even mentioning earning potential. A good set of tools in the right hand will far out earn nearly any medical posution outside of literally MD positions and surgeons. And worst case scenario I find out im not a good wrench, I can still sell me shit and recuperate my loss. She finds out medicine isnt for her, shes still out 400k indefinitely.

wtf? This is the polar opposite of true. Banks will gladly loan money to doctors. They will not loan money to some guy who thinks his tools have value.

Now stop being a two, yes two, not to, two is a number, too means also, since i need to specify, year old and actually back up your claims or shut up, got it?
Btw this idiot, has made enough just in resale of old tools to pay for a good chunk of a college tuition, have earned close to 3k just this past month in sales of old tools I no longer use. Thats on top of having earned a few thousand off each of them before selling. But hey what do I know about this stuff. Please tell me more what qualifies you to open your mouth here.

I'm currently in this process. I do my own research and talk to loan agents. I know that I'm going to have to saddle a huge financial burden so I'm trying to mitigate any damage. Yeah you might qualify for some really predatory loans and interest rates but seeing as doctors don't make nearly as much as most think I just said that poor financial savvy and over burdened debt does preclude you from some of the more desirable loans
[–]213546416546842 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
He said "liquid asset," which is an item that you can quickly sell for cash. Tools can be sold for cash, so they are liquid assets. A college degree is not a liquid asset.
Snap-On tools are some of the best tools money can buy, they are made in USA, and they are priced accordingly. We're not talking about some blue light special bullshit from kmart. These are designed for daily professional use. You can't buy them in a store, the Snap-On tool truck comes by your shop once a week to sell tools, replace broken tools (Snap-On has lifetime warranty), and collect payments for financed tools.
If he had to, OP could get a good chunk of his money back by selling his Snap-On tools. Even broken Snap-On tools are worth money, because you can trade them in for brand new ones for free.
[–]B_P_G3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You can sell tools for cash (not sure about how quickly or for how much of the original price) but then you can't use them anymore. So, in reality, if you're a mechanic/tradesman/craftsman and your living depends on those tools then you can't sell them until you retire. So they're not really that liquid of an asset. Liquid assets don't require you to quit your job in order to cash them in.
And though I imagine Snap-On does do financing on new tools (like every retailer in the country at the moment) I doubt they'll lend you money against your existing tools. So basically you're in no better cash position than the doctor. You do have the option of selling the tools and leaving your trade at any time (to do what I'm not sure) whereas the doctor really doesn't but I don't see that as that big of an advantage. I mean how many people just up and totally change their profession? Even if you hate your job its not worth starting over from the beginning doing something else and most likely nobody would hire you anyway.
[–]Londonnj1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Plenty, close to half of college stupids swap majors or get jobs outside of their field of education. At which case that asset becomes null and void. Youre in a vastly better position. For starters a small intial risk, worst case with that degree I dont get a decent job and now am stuck with 400k debt for a decent chunk of my life. Worst case with the tools, I see no earning potential, sell them and maybe take a few grand loss. The advantage is there is almost no risk, and the investment itself is a liquid asset.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Banks loan money to employed doctors. With fair debt to income ratios. While I get what OP was talking about, it wasn't a perfect analogy. In the end, the tools have resale value. A diploma by itself does not if you choose not to use it for the exact type of job its made for. I sold cars for years and we had a salesman that made it through medical school but just couldn't pass boards. Gave up after his 2nd attempt. Pretty high in debt but he seemed happy.

[–]Londonnj-1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
You cleaely have no idea how loajs work secured or unsecured. What bank will take a 400k debt as collateral on a secured loan? Debt isnt an asset. Unless the bank can use that 400k degree thenselves its worthless to them. The only value in it is the earning potential of the owner. A 15k liquid asset is a 15k liquid asset, don't knwo where you get this notion because they are tools rhat 15k value means nothing, thats jsut stupid. But yeah, genius go find a bamk that will take someones 400k debt as collateral for even more debt lol.
[–]RemoteGuava-1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Like the doctor's education, those tools only have value in the context of them being used to generate income. This is why IFRS makes a clear distinction between historical book value and "available for sale" value. The second you decide to sell the tools, their value would be marked down to maybe 1k and it would be recognized as a 14k writedown (loss).
The doctor's education would be considered an intangible asset and would be held at book value until she decides to stop working.
[–]Londonnj1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
No a 15k item is a 15k item. How is this so hard to grasp? If i bus a 30k limo, I have a 30k asset, ON TOP of the earning potential it brings. What liquid valie does a degree hold? Where can I go sell a degree? I sure as fuck can sell a tool set, on top of earning potential.
If you know nothing about tools, which youve clearly proven yourself to, why not just shut up? Making assumption just makes you look like an ass. I promise a 15k snapon tool set, even 15 years down the line will still fetch close to 5k. What world do you idiots live in where tools have no value themselves, dispite being one of the largest resale markets in the country?
[–]OrthodoxPolock1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Did he really just say 15k in tools will only be worth 1k in resale?? This whole thing has been hilarious though, I honestly just was talking about how I know alot of people with college degrees they don't use and how I'm glad I have less debt than them and I actually have something I'll use for the rest of my life. Whether I remain a mechanic by trade or not those tools will always prove to be useful for the duration of my life whereas a college degree becomes useless the second you stop working in that particular field. I actually have over 60k in tools, the bill just currently sits at 15k so I've also built a fairly decent credit score with them which definitely helps my ability to receive a loan.
[–]Londonnj0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, yes he did. Im getting astonished at the levels of ignorance in this thread. Its as if these people have no concept whatsoever of basic economics. Cant differenciate liquid assets from non-liquid ones. Cant grasp the concept or resale. And seem to think tools are valueless. I guarentee you these people would shut their mouths quicker than they opened them if they even knew the resale market on tools, espeically brands lile snapon. Hell I saw a used 3/4" Snapon Impact gun going for $800 on letgo just today. And thats literally a single tool. Let alone the tool boxes themselves. Anyhow respect, and congrats man. Would like to have me a ncue snapon set ay some point, but right now just can't justify the added cost.
[–]RemoteGuava0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm an electrician and I don't know 1 person who has expensive tools. It's a very niche item that is extremely illiquid due to low demand.
It seems like you overpaid for some tools and are now trying to justify why it was not a mistake. You would like to think the bank would be willing to use the tools as collateral for a loan, but we both know they won't.
I never overpaid for anything? Not sure why youre directying thsi at me. Do you need expensive toosl to do a job? No, you can rebuild a car from scratch with harbor freight tools. Its niche? If it was niche Snapon and by affiliation Williams would have GROWING Stock for nearly the past decade consistantly. That said if youre an eletricial and you truly believe expensive tools are niche, ill put money you arent union. I don't know a single union eletrican who doesnt own 5k+ in snapon.

I work at a hospital. See many female doctors burned out. The stress of being a hospital doctor is very high and many female doctors can’t cope with the pressure. A few months ago I saw a male attending yell at a female medical intern who was brought down to tears. Attendings let you have it with both barrels when you make a mistake as a medical intern. They know the stakes are high and don’t care if you’re female or male.

Some are actually quite smart. However, they can’t handle stressful situations like men. So they burn out quickly. Also, if they are on call...their social life is practically screwed. Most do not practice for very long when they realize being a stay at home mom is much more rewarding and easier. Some of them go to medical school because they feel they have to prove something. I have seen quite a few of them totally broken down. Especially in a trauma 1 hospitals ER.

On a more serious note, college should be for those who can afford it, no loans allowed. We wouldn't have this "college debt bubble" if bimbos like her weren't allowed to go (and some guys who get in due to athletic performance and minority quotas).
[–]Lonely_Ramen_Noodle1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Pyro1119211 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I meant in the sense that all the sport teams and such force their athletes to get degrees, which itself is idiotic. Besides, the colleges could be used as a psuedo testing ground for future athletes without needing to actually be in college for a degree they're forced to get. College still makes millions, and tax payer money isn't being needlessly wasted on forced degrees. Sounds like a win win to me.
[–]listgo1-1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Pyro1119210 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Colleges before loans and such were much more affordable. Compensating for inflation an average year at something like Harvard would be 12~K USD compared to the average of 42K nowadays. That's just about three years at an entry level minimum wage job to afford an entire ride at Harvard. Colleges overcharge VASTLY because big daddy government will pay the bill, where they were forced to lower prices when it was the average joe trying to get in.
It's the same with healthcare, hospitals overcharge because either big daddy government or insurance companies will pay for it, whereas it would be much cheaper if everyone paid in cash. Right now in fact, if you pay in cash at a hospital (typically in full, which some I know can't do) it is MUCH cheaper.
Everything the government regulates becomes overpriced and mediocre at best, it's a better deal for literally everyone if people paid for things themselves and saved up where they could.
