There are plenty of women who would be offended if their partner asked for a paternity test. A lot of men become trapped by this and only discover a child is not theirs many years after the fact.
When a woman gives birth, there is also bound to be a man in the equation who now has to decide if he is going to raise this child or not. When making this decision, it should be a man's right to know without a shadow of a doubt whether he is the biological father of the child or not.
You wouldn't buy a car before requesting the Carfax, would you?
EDIT: after reading through many of these comments I've changed my position.

I don't know where the equivalence between adoption and paternity fraud comes from. "Adoptive parents do so well, so it doesn't matter if you aren't the father...".
Patience is running thin.
