I had a revelation the other day. For years I've said the following:

The archetypal male hero story is St. Peter slaying the dragon. The archetypal female hero story is supposed to be Beauty and The Beast.

But the contemporary archetypal female hero story is Helen of Troy. A woman, blameless, her value counted in the violence people will do for her, the dead bodies laid at the feet of her beauty, and only the winner allowed to interact with her.

(This isn't desired by all women, but it's definitely taking over.)

So what's the contemporary archetypal male hero story? I'm open to suggestions if you've got one better. From what I find in western civilization, the contemporary archetypal male hero story is not even a male story. It's Anne Frank. Let it sit a while in your mind. You'll find the tragic gravity of it convincing.

(This isn't desired by men at all, but they recede into it due to the neutering process of our society of "dignity".)
