Can you guess whom politicians like more?

A friend of mine had a friend who took a vow of poverty and would constantly give all of his money away. He was an over-the-road trucker and he interpreted the Gospels of Christ very literally and decided to just give away what he earned and live in his truck
I don't know the guys name and I don't think the guy told anyone what he was doing.
I don't think what he was doing is smart, but to me, a true good person is someone who does good when they know no one will notice
[β]cfuse11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It may not be smart, but it sure would take some serious balls to literally put your money where your mouth is like that.

I once saw a poster that read something like "rules are what you follow when someone is watching. Ethics are what you follow when no one is watching"
Also, jesus and that whole parable about the rich merchant and the poor lady donating to the church.
Charity should not be done for rewards.

C.S. Lewis (Narnia author) made this famous long ago in the Mad, Bad, or God aka Lunatic, Liar, or Lord argument:
I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic β on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg β or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. ... Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God.[14]
Because Jesus literally preached what your friend is doing.
In Matthew and Mark, the discussion is set within the period when Jesus ministered in Perea, east of the River Jordan. In Matthew, a rich young man asks Jesus what actions bring eternal life. First, Jesus advises the man to obey the commandments. When the man responds that he already observes them, and asks what else he can do, Jesus adds: If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.[4] Luke has a similar episode and states that: When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. Jesus looked at him and said, "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven."[5]

Hey, Soros money has to be well spent, that includes Greta's publicity slush fund.
Seriously, if you want to see people blank off when they talk about that little shit, ask them "Wow, a kid, travelling all by herself? Who pays for all this? Who writes her speeches and arranges her tours?"
[β]StarchRunner-2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not really enamored of the planting tree garbage out there though. It's mostly a feel-good numbers game and rows of homogenous (or even several species) trees don't really make a forest including what Mr. Beast does (for views, mostly).

Most people literally rewrite their own thoughts and memories to cast themselves as the good guy no matter what they did or how it turned out. We see mountains of evil in the world but trying to find people that are prepared to own it without excuse is practically impossible.

Mgtow isnt a monolithic entity. Its just a philosophy on living your life.
It doesnt really relate to climate change. If you feel climate change is an issue, change your life. If you dont, dont. Thats about all that "mgtow" can say.. Make up your own mind, and act accordingly
[β]Mazdumundi0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, the "alt right" is the only western political group i know of that doesn't shit on men for existing, so it's not that surprising to me that a group of men would find themselves sympathetic to that sort of thing. If "wrongthink" worries you, i wouldn't be posting here bud. Personally, i like diversity of opinion, so please stay and keep on speaking your mind. Just make sure you're respectful of others opinions while doing so, and dont be a baby who cries to the reddit admins.
And honestly, imo greta was an annoying figurehead that didn't accomplish anything other than fueling a few news cycles. Did her speech at the UN lead to any changes? Did she accomplish anything other than winning a couple personality contests? Because i cant think of anything she did other than "raise awareness", and personally, i think slactivism like that is worse than doing nothing.

Personally, I'm just not sure why she's the designated spokesperson. She has achieved fuck all to actually solve the problem. Elon Musk (who most leftists would regard as the devil incarnate) has done more to tackle the problem, as have legions of other, more deserving people--including more-deserving women.
I personally will take her seriously if and when she goes to university, gets an engineering, chemistry, or physics degree, and sets herself to work on advanced solar panels, or nuclear fusion, or electric airliners. I won't pick on her for her looks or her supposed autism, but I will treat her as the climate change equivalent to a Facebook mom sharing memes about Flint, MI's water supply.

This would be a different story if there was a logging company cutting down this dudes forest every couple of years, just directly countering any progress he made. Its not bad to be pissed at corporations for ruining the environment. It took this guy 36 years to make this βforestβ, and if someone over there thinks they can make a buck off paper theyβll have it down in less than 1.
Its easier to destroy than create. Holding people who cause wanton destruction accountable makes more sense than keeping your mouth shut and attempting to counteract megacorporation pollution 1 tree at a time; even 1000 trees planted at a time wont solve that problem.

Media is everything, the right thing at the right moment to the right people can make wonders on how you perceive something, facts doesn't matter, what you do doesn't matter, the only thing that matters is how others perceive and think about you (or your brand) that's why it doesn't matter if everyone says you did something terrible when you haven't done anything bad, even when facts prove that you're innocent, the damage is done and the truth will no change the perception of the society have about that thing.
