My wife wants to quit her job even though we’re barely scraping by.

My (M36) wife (F34) wants to quit her job because she’s overworked and under appreciated, among other things.

We both have well paying, full-time jobs. But we also have A LOT of debt (mostly credit cards). I’ve been trying for over a year to get her to stop using her credit cards and live off of the money she makes. It seems like she doesn’t care. As long as she can make the monthly payments she’s fine continuing using her credit cards. About every other month, she’ll get a short term loan because she doesn’t have enough to pay her bills. I find out about the loan after the fact.

She works for a school and only has a month and a half left until summer break. She’s already applying at other schools for next school year. The vast majority of schools only hire for her type of position in the summer. So switching jobs mid-school year isn’t an option. She has a graduate degree that only applies to working in education. So she can’t get a non-education job and be paid the same.

She’s been talking about quitting (almost weekly) for the past 3 months. Each time she brings it up, I’ve said that we can’t afford for her to do that. And that our bills are the same amount — but sometimes MORE than — our combined income. When I tell her this, she erupts with anger and says I’m not supportive.

I’m at a loss. I don’t want to say what I always say because I know how it will play out: her yelling at me, me yelling at her, and one of us potentially bringing up leaving/divorce.

How can I be supportive of my wife, yet have her remain in her job? Any other relevant advice is welcome.

TL;DR: My wife wants to quit her job, with no other job prospects, but we need her income just to get by.

EDIT: Well coincidentally, she just messaged me saying she wants to quit this week and asked what I thought. I told her that we should talk when we get home from work. Any last words of wisdom reddit?
