"Attention passengers... we've had a slight health issue in the cockpit. Does anyone here know how to fly a plane?"
(raises hand): "I have a Gender Studies degree."
"OK, that's totally just as valid. We need your help up here..."

"Seems to me, the problem on this aircraft is that there are no female pilots"
"But this flight is mostly operated by auto-pilot"
"Right, but how many female pilot students are there every year?"
Airplane starts descending rapidly
"Mam! Help us, we need a pilot!"
"Blame the patriarchy from preventing women becoming pilots!"
Plane crashes and everyone dies

"And why do we call it "mankind" for that matter? Shouldn't it be, well, not humankind because that excludes animals that identify as people, such as my cat who I make wear sweaters. So why isn't it "personkind"?!
See how useful my gender studies degree is? I'm tackling all of the most important problems of the world!"
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
personkind discriminates against those who identify not as persons. while an owlkin or elfkin or dragonkin might identify as a person, us attack helicopters certainly don't. i demand an end to this discrimination because I'M OFFENDED!

You thought wrong - there are no rules for men in this community. Every man decides how to go his own way. You don't like it, too bad.

If you can't use your degree to get a job and make money out of it, it's a useless degree...
College isn't so you can learn only what you want, but to learn stuff in order to be able to contribute better in society, earning more money in the process...
[–]BukM115 points16 points17 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
had a school career guidance councillor tell me "all degrees are worth the same" when i was asking if doing physics was a good choice for career prospects in unrelated fields (e.g finance as I wanted to be a city trader) she called me "arrogant" because i didnt swallow her bullshit that a drama degree was worth the same as a physics degree.
Glad i ignored her graduated and got some really good jobs that pay well and demand a highly technical degree (such as physics/maths) didnt see any jobs that needed a drama degree.
lol she was so full of shit
[–]Cristoff131 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
But how many jobs actually require 4 years of college? Not that many. The main purpose of a college degree is so you won't look like a stupid slacker. Also because many jobs and career paths have an (often unnecessary) unofficial or official requirement for a bachelors degree. Often any bachelor's degree will do.
But Gender Studies or Political Science does look like bad on your resume. Marginally better than no degree at all, but you'd be far better off with a generic arts degree.
People ideally should get a STEM degree if reasonably possible, but not everyone has the intelligence or drive to get these.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Usually degree in STEM require several years of college. I have an engineering degree in embedded and real time software design, it learn a lot in my 5 years in university (I'm from France, Master and Engineering degree require 5 years of studies after graduation).
[–]starkiller4390 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
How difficult was engineering, i want to change my major to it when i get the chance
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I guess it depends, for me it was quite easy. I never had to work that much in class... But I've been tested at 19 by a psychologist and I've an average score of 143 on WAIS-III IQ test.
Lots of my mates had difficulties learning it all, and applying the knowledge to concrete cases (the area that was easy for me).
[–]wildfireboat0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What are you interested in doing with your life? You should make a new post if you have the time!
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It might sound like a waste for lots of people, but I'm not interested in building a career.
I actually work a somewhat easy job (well, easy for me at least): I work in a "large" software services company, and I'm just an embedded and real time software developer. They usually put me on critical projects, where they need an higher level of technicality because they know I can deal with it. I was offered higher level of responsibilities (manager, team leader) but I choose to stay in a technical position in order to remain where I'm good at and to avoid dealing with the patrons.
I make a decent leaving (I'm far from rich, and I could make way more by taking a manager or team leader position) but I get to work something I'm comfortable in and I have lots of free time with no stress at all.
On my free time, I love to experiment new technologies (in network and server administration lately...), I have personal embedded project from time to time (electronic design/routing with CPU/µC/PLD), etc.
[–]New_User19841 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's because college degrees used to mean something. Now any asshole willing to go into debt can get a degree.
[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Funny thing is, if every woman that is currently in college for Gender Studies were to change their major to a "non-typical" woman degree (i.e. engineering, business, etc) all of the shit that they complain about would go away. Earnings gap (not wage gap), lack of representation in certain jobs, among other issues.
The fact that women choose to get a gender studies degree is an admission in and of itself that everything feminists talk about is complete bullshit; there is no patriarchy, it all comes down to women's choices.
[–]lightnsfw3 points4 points5 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And then littering all their discarded signs on the streets.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Most of the classes would be useful if the schools had the right to kick out losers or hold kids back. I always hear people saying that basic accounting should be part of school. As someone who went to school, I know for a fact that it already is. Kids don't know anything because schools refuse to hold anyone back.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
we need a practical test before entering college. we'll call it the ROI test. before entering college and before declaring a major, you have to know the ROI at that university and on that major at your university. if you get the ROI wrong by 10% or more, you can't register there or for that major. you'd also have to know how many years you'll have to eat ramen noodles after you graduate to pay off the average student loans for that major at that university.
no one would major in shit degrees like this anymore.
Except in government jobs. Hence why they can influence it.

[–]GreatJanitor11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yes, your degree is valid. However, if you and I were applying for the same job, and it was a technical job, and the manager going through the resumes looked at your bachelors of science in gender studies degree and my Associates of Applied Science degree in Robotics, odds are great that I will get the call for an interview while you will not.
Point is it isn't that you have the degree, it matters what you spent your time on studying. I am not going to get an HR job with my degree. You aren't going to become an engineer with a gender studies degree.
[–]eatonsht0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm pretty sure gender studies is liberal arts or humanities degree. It would be a Bachelors of Arts. A bachelors of science is reserved for meaningful degrees, like engineering
My high school graduation certificate holds more weight than that shitty 'degree'.

What is involved in getting a fire degree? If there is a lot of science, you could do well at almost any job. Apparently philosophy is useful too. If you really understand philosophy, you can understand what motivates people. This is also said about martial arts and military service. Discipline is valuable.
[–]mcflannelman0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
About eight or so classes is what had to take, on top of my gen ed. It's been a bit so let's see if I remember. Also, only an associates, but still a pointless degree.
Fire Behavior (limited chemistry) Building Construction Fire Prevention Systems Fire History/101 Foreground Hydraulics (math)
Plus a few more miscellaneous classes that I can't recall. Basically it makes you look smart-er when you apply for a fire department job.

This is what is so great about SJW they all head for the giant crunch when the academia student world collapses and they have to exist in the real world, and they suddenly learn that to actually earn a wage you have to add value to your employers business.
Gender studies has absolutely fucking zero value, if anything its a liability as someone with a GS degree is more likely to be a walking lawsuit who makes a giant fuss over non issues. compared to someone without the degree.
Its just fucking hilarious that these people actually think they are at the cutting edge of academia and intelligence but in actuality they dont even make the grade to the most basic technical level degree.

"I need feminism because it's the only way I feel my life choices were as valid as anybody else"
It's great that you pursued something you wanted to do, but that does not make it as valuable as other skills. Law, medicine, engineering, childcare, teaching, even art or gymnastics contributes more to other people and to yourself. It's fine if that is what you want, it's fine if you want to work at McDonalds, or eat junk food, or whatever, but don't blame your choices on others or expect to be treated equally.
She is the real victim here. You can't put that on a resume. I would never even consider hiring a radical feminist. She paid money to be given the same priority as a criminal.

I honestly think feminism is being used as an excuse by the MGTOW type of men for their own inadequacies , the payjama boys who find it's all too hard when life doesn't hand them the best of everything on a platter, and it's much easier to take the path of least resistance.
I don't believe feminism even exists these days only crazies/lesbians/man haters, unlike true feminist's who fought for equal rights and opportunities, the women who call themselves feminists these days actual don't have a cause, once women achieved equal rights and opportunities feminism became redundant.
