An old man that spent some time as an old school secret squirrel told me a story about Chernobyl. He said that when it was time to shut down the reactor, they had to have volunteers that would surely die.
Prisoners could not be trusted, necessarily. Men lined up. Each one was told to go in and make a few turns. Then, press a certain button, or switch. They'd respond, "What next?", to which the scientists would say, "that's it".
So the man would wait a few minutes, go in walking down a hallway. He would make a right, then a left, and another left, stepping over bodies as he went.
In his last moments he'd press forward to complete his task, fore the next man would step over him, and depend on the fact that the mission was complete.
I'm unsure of the credibility here, but the story stayed with me. These men knew what was at stake. They were not scientist, or soldiers necessarily. But this was their home.

Because men have been taught to be self-sacrificing and disposable. How many women volunteered? I'll bet zero!
Die for your country! (Your life for the matriarchy!)

Well many MEN died fighting fires after the explosion. ..wasn't the the explosion itself the cause of the hot shutdown ... I don't know how fast people on site died... but that seems way too fast unless they were like picking shit up like Spock.
