Nowadays, it's generally considered normal for a person to marry if they're at least 18 years old. In some parts of the US it's still done at 16 or 17, but only with parental permission. When you see records or stories from previous centuries, you find that people used to marry way younger. It wasn't uncommon for a bride to be only 14 years old, especially a girl. Sometimes a dude in his 40s or 50s was marrying a girl that young. That shit totally creeps people out today, of course. It does make me wonder though, but given the explosive topic, you might be afraid to ask why. But why was it like that? Why did they marry 14 year olds way back when?
