Good on you. They'll probably tell you what sort of proposal you'll need to submit.

I'd ask them if they know of anybody else in the community interested in something similar. Volunteer work is worthwhile, but exhausting. Having a group of people that meet each week and split up the necessary duties will be very valuable and also help you to meet new people.

They may ask you to raise money for the project. If so, feel free to message me as I have experience in non-profit fundraising and would be glad to help :)

If you want to get active in civic politics, check out the social network NextDoor. The mayor and city council (and people who know those people) are usually on there. It's a good way to get people involved and get a beat on how people in your community feel about local issues.

Don't get discouraged if you voice something there and someone disagrees with you. It's still social media. Just know that you're right and stand by your principles. Other people will be reading and may agree with you without saying anything.

And learn how to twist things in your favor. Are people upset with the vagrant population? Well remember Jesus was a vagrant (this works well if you think they're a church goer). He wanted us to help the poor. That's why he was a vagrant. And if you don't want to see homeless people walking around, what they need is a shelter to go to. They need help getting off the street so they won't bother people.

People get it in their head that homeless people are bad because they're associated with crime and drug use and things like that. So they get into this black and white mentality where they think we don't need to do anything for them because they're bad and they don't deserve help.

And the truth is many of them do commit petty crimes. But it's because nobody is helping them. If the community was more involved and lended a hand, that problem would go away. So that's the angle that you need to approach this. By helping the homeless community, you are helping the city. You are reducing crime, you are making people feel safer, you are increasing property values, increasing business revenues, decreasing panhandling and loitering, and ultimately creating an investment that will pay itself back for everyone else, not just for the homeless.

People should do it because they care, but that's not how people think, and that's not how people work. So that angle is usually a pretty big part of how you sell stuff like this.
