Monthly Art Challenge Submission: A haiku about "Summer Haze"

August 7, 2021

All around is fun / people dancing in the sun / I am still alone

This has been a challenging summer for me for a number of reasons and I have felt much lonelier than I normally would. Looking around I see people enjoying the warm weather and and being happy but I have not been able to take any time to enjoy it like I normally would or to connect with my friends. It's difficult because normally I'm happiest in the summer. When I thought of "summer haze" I thought about a feeling in my head of "missing" this summer.

I like it! The rhyming scheme enforces how alone you're feeling.

Anything you can do to try to get out more? Disc golf is a lovely, chill sport if you're looking for something new to do ;-)

Nice work!

I can certainly relate with the feeling in the haiku, albeit for a slightly different reason. I have always felt more of a 'Hazy Shade of Winter' than a 'Boy(s) of Summer' myself!

Hey! Thanks for submitting for the monthly challenge. I really like what you've written. If it's okay to ask, what's been keeping you from connecting with your friends recently?

Thanks! A combination of a few things. I’m going to grad school in the fall so I’m trying to save as Much money as I can, most of my friends live a few states away so travel is expensive, a lot of the activities I enjoy in the summer are athletic and I have an injury that’s been limiting me, my parter was dealing with health issues so I’ve been taking care of her. And in general I had a rough time with education the first time around , going back to school has caused me mountain of anxiety that I’ve not handing well at all

Congratulations on getting into grad school, and for not letting your previous difficulties with school stop you from trying again. I've been out of grad school for a couple years now, and I think the best social experience I had during that time was taking a fencing class at my school's athletic center. Hopefully you'll be able to connect with others doing something you enjoy athletically as well while you're there. And while you are doing a great thing in supporting your partner as well, make sure you aren't ignoring your own needs too often. I've been down that road. My psychologist once told me that grad school is an inherently selfish undertaking, not because it's bad, but because of the sheer time and attention commitment it requires at the exclusion of so many other things that balance our lives.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
