This is such a completely innocuous post by the BBC. People remember her BECAUSE she was a larger than life sexpot actress/courtesan. This quote is one of her most well know and typifies that image of her.

Not once does the BBC say anything positive about her quotes, literally all it says in the article is

I'm a feminist and I think this is gross.

Alimony was a system set up in a time when men and women would get married at 18, with the idea that it would be for life, and the woman would start popping out babies, helping with the family business, keeping house, with weeks spent cleaning, mending, cooking, & gardening and weekends spent manually doing laundry while the dude would be the one officially bringing in the money. In that social context, it makes no sense that a man who divorced his first wife after twenty years of marriage should contribute to her health and well being after she's contributed twenty years of unpaid work to him, gave him children, and may have had little to no outside employment opportunities, especially in cases where the women were not independently wealthy. The idea is that they were partners for 20 years, and that the wife is entitled to an equal share of the marital assets because she helped acquire those assets, even if not financially.

Anyway, with free-er divorce laws (a good thing!) and a more equal workforce (a good thing!), alimony has been getting rarer and rarer. For those with substantial assets, pre-nups are available. The only thing divorced people in 2016 should be responsible for is the care of their children.
