The holocaust and slavery happened to individuals. We think of these crimes as having been perpetrated against groups because of attributes shared by the victims of these crimes, not because possessing these attributes automatically makes one a victim of these crimes. "The Jews suffered in the holocaust" is a short hand for "Jewish individuals suffered in the holocaust."

I make this point in order to reveal the absurdity of arguments that "bad thing happened to group X in the past, therefore bad thing should happen to group Y in the present." Such arguments are nothing but sophistries cooked up in order to justify hatred of individuals from group Y in the present. Bad things that happened to specific individuals in the past do not justify mistreatment of other specific individuals in the present. Being black, or white, or male, or female, or Jewish does not tie one to the triumphs or tragedies of other individuals who fall into these categories.

It is all too easy to be fooled into thinking of individuals as being defined by membership in one or more groups, and to imagine moral conflicts as being defined at the group level. But this is false, and is a flaw in thinking that evil people will use against you. Evil people will claim that you must be punished because of something someone else did in another place and time, simply because you have the same skin color as that other person, possess the same genitals, or whatever else it is about you that the evil person uses to justify their irrational hatred of you.

"But women were excluded from X for centuries" is such a Modern, Whigish, historically illiterate and entitled perspective.

A) There were aspects of society which men were excluded from or discouraged from being authoritative in because they were the purview of women, it's just that we don't focus on them because they were positions of less power and authority

B) A position has more power and authority when it has more widespread consequences in its acute failure, things which makes it more stressful too

C) There were obligations on men regarding their obligations to providing for their families which were not imposed on women, making their privileges in employment the tools needed to fulfill those obligations

D) As women demanded those privileges, slowly, in a delayed Fashion the obligations began to be enforced too, sometimes resulting in the loss of some of their other privileges necessitated by their exclusion from power

E) The past has been a lot harsher, so if society wanted to assure the wellbeing of women, there were constraints within nature on what women could do and to what extent (take it for example that women need to be almost as vulnerable in their perception as an infant because as a mother, they need to feel how harmful will something be to that infant so they maximize their children's chances of survival)
