Faux-intellectual conservative. Infamous for "destroying" high-school kids in debates.
Edit: for anyone interested here's an hour long YouTube video detailing who, and what, Benjamin Shapiro is.
[–][deleted] 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Harvard Law graduate with a Poly Sci Major. Hardly a "faux-intellectual'.
[–]Madskil321 -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
I wouldn't say faux-intellectual but all he does is win debates. You don't necessarily have to be factual or well informed to defeat someone in a debate. If your opponent gets tripped up or is less informed than you are, you'll most likely win against them. That's all.
This is how Ben Shapiro debates. He floods the conversation with information, some true, some half true. If the opponent can't keep up, that's it.
Also, many of his supporters are conservatives or independents who lean conservatively. Confirmation bias usually gives him an edge.
I'm a nobody and even I can find some holes in his arguments in the videos I've seen of him.
[–]pm_me_your_buttbulge 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If your opponent gets tripped up or is less informed than you are, you'll most likely win against them. That's all.
I mean... sounds like he's smarter than thing and more skilled. "All" you have to do is put someone up more informed which... doesn't happen.
An informed opponent should be able to easily shoot down the half true stuff and bring up true stuff and win. That doesn't happen.
It also helps that the extreme left treats him like a Nazi while treating him like Nazi's treated Jews which gives him ammo.
Then perhaps you should try to debate him. The problem is he's mostly right when the people going against him are mostly wrong.
[–]Thekisk 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You should debate him then. Email him or somethin
[–]Madskil321 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I will most definitely not. I'd get destroyed just as easy as any of his opponents. There are public figures who've stated the same.
Given a live debate, I'd get overwhelmed by the barrage of information he puts out.
Again, I'm a nobody, a simple soldier in the U.S. Army. Even if I could, I have nothing to gain from beating him in a debate.
I'll sum up my original point again, he is certainly not dumb by any means. I wouldn't call him a trickster or charlatan either. Anyone who says so has been consumed by their bias. He is good at beating uninformed left leaning people in debates. Especially young college kids.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Didn't he storm off live TV, on the BBC, once because he was asked something super simple but it just went slightly out of his beliefs
[–]rborens33 points 4 years ago* [recovered] (9 children) | Copy Link
He walked out because his interviewer was antagonizing him while claiming impartiality.
[–]Petsweaters 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Interviewer should challenge what is said. If they didn't, it's not an interview
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Interviewers should challenge their guests, sure, but not be openly and actively hostile. There’s a subtle difference.
[–]pinkeythehoboken22 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
That interviewer wasn't actively hostel. He asked a question from the opposite side of the political spectrum about abortion, then Shapiro went off about him not admitting he's left, to which the interviewer replied, "if this was a pro choice novel, I would as you pro life questions", Ben just threw a complete hissy fit.
[–]pm_me_your_buttbulge 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Challenge != antagonize.
If I simply call you a racist and a sexist, as an example, and then claim being impartial -- that's not challenging someone. That's antagonizing them.
[–]ColonelVirus 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What's what interviewers do though. He should have been prepared for it.
Interviewers poke holes in your shit, bring up things you said from eons ago to see if you still believe it or why you stance has changed. It's all about trying to tilt you and make you say something silly or contradictory to your own beliefs. If your belief system is robust enough it will and should survive such an onslaught.

Ben got emotional when presented with facts. Ironic
[–][deleted] 36 points37 points38 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The guy called his beliefs "out of the dark ages" or something then fell back on "I'm an impartial journalist"
I actually think Ben was right to not continue talking to someone who had bad intentions. He definitely panicked and started to spiral though.
[–]jbuk1 -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Well his views on abortion are literally from the bible. Saying dark ages is suggesting that Ben is at least a thousand years ahead of the "good book" in terms of views but still about a thousand years from the present.

[–]Some_juicy_shaq_meat 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
First of, Andrew Neil is a hard line conservative and Ben Shapiro calling him "on the left" is laughable.
Second, what does it matter what political view the interviewer has? He asked a question, Ben Shapiro couldn't even remotely defend his position and chose to tuck his tail twixt his legs and run. A pathetic display to say the least.
[–]jackcos 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Some_juicy_shaq_meat -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Lol, he uses fast speech and lots of fallacious arguments to make the audience feel like he's winning, but when faced with a reasonable opponent his "arguments" crumble.
He's also weirdly obsessed with AOCs feet.
[–]SirkovTheWanderer 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
That has nothing to do with anything. It has nothing to do with his political views, nothing to do with whether he's right or wrong, nothing to do with his style of debate. Literally nothing, other than an attempt to make it look like a character flaw.
That's what you losers do. You can't say anything without insulting someone. If you can't beat someone's arguments, you go after their character so you can pretend you don't have to.
[–]Shadezyy 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Isn't that literally what everyone does? It's bad, yeah, but not unique to any one group.
[–]EnIdiot -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I have yet to see the evidence that he is obsessed with her feet, but if he is, and it can be demonstrated, it goes a long way to discounting his mental acumen and what he chooses to focus on in public. In rhetorical terms his ethos would be damaged. When you go public like this guy does, you lose a certain amount of “hey-guys-this -is-off-the-table” ability.

Lol you say this like it’s some objective video explaining who he is, even though the video is titled “why you shouldn’t listen to Ben Shapiro” nice.
Meme culture has made it all goofy and about “destroying” people. But bens been saying the same shit he’s been saying. I don’t agree with him fully but a lot of what he says isn’t just emotional appeals, it’s routed in data.
[–]Some_juicy_shaq_meat -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It is an in depth analysis of Ben Shapiro. Just because you don't like what Cody says or how he said it, doesn't make it untrue.
[–]AlterAlias1 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Its a one sided analysis. Just because you like what the guy says doesn’t make it true either. I think when debating something, the only real thing that should be discussed is the issue at hand, the specific argument, etc. if you can take one belief or idea that Ben Shapiro holds and debate that specifically, I’ll listen. But honestly it’s rare that people actually get down to the issue. I see Ben get down to the facts and don’t see a lot of people combat him with facts or data. Some do. And I don’t agree with all of what Ben says, but his positions are usually routed in verifiable data which is what I acknowledge
[–]Some_juicy_shaq_meat 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Except that it's not. He often makes assumptions and arguments based on his own political or religious views.
[–]Thekisk 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]Some_juicy_shaq_meat 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]Thekisk 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Bens never gonna debate someone just because they want to (unfortunately). If they ever get into twitter beef or something or Ben invites them on his show they’ll talk. The only person Ben legitimately has turned down has been Milo, and it’s because milo is a provocateur and not actually interested in debate, although I’d love to see them debate.

Ed Kemper is a monster. A serial killing necrophiliac. I have sympathy for those who suffer abuse, but it seems irresponsible to characterize him as having been "a smart kid with a bright future". Using him as an example presents concerning optics.

Perhaps we're just interpreting it differently. I'd still say there are less controversial and more applicable examples of the situation he is describing.
[–]Oncefa2 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The fact that he was so intelligent is part of the reason he was "successful" as a serial killer.
He was also very sociable and people he talked to liked him. He wasn't some kind of anti-social "loner". And in fact most serial killers tend to be very sociable.
[–]excess_inquisitivity 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Children desperately need love, compassion, and understanding from their parents. If they aren't given these things from their primary caretakers, is it their own fault for not having them?
[–]Orange__Julius 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As the OP stated, thats a separate issue of nature vs. nurture. My main point is that it doesn't seem like a good idea to associate your point of view with a murdering necrophiliac if you want your point to stand on its merits.

Nobody is saying this buddy. Just that women ought to be held accountable to their actions, and that if they were, things like this wouldn't happen.
Another example is Gypsy Rose. She also killed her mother. And like Ed, her mother was abusive. I assume you think it's just a coincidence but FBI research disagrees: there is a very strong link between abusive parents and later criminality in life. Most abusive parents happen to be mothers, and most of their victims are boys.

[–]CellGel116 points 4 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
I've notified them. If anyone else decides to report the billboard, please include its location in your complaint description:
Regent Rd near the Red Rose Retail Centre in Salford
We may also want to contact the company who owns the billboard, which appears to be Clear Channel Direct. I've sent them an email to confirm. When they respond, I'll give an update.
EDIT: I've heard back from the ASA:
We understand the billboards in question have been donated by the media space owners to the artist Martin Firrell, and that the posters published are his works of art.
As stated in the Scope of the Code document, which you can find here, ‘works of art exhibited in public or private’ (II. g) are not considered advertising content for the purposes of the Advertising Rules we enforce, and we are therefore unable to take your complaint further on this occasion.
If you wish to pursue your complaint you may wish to contact the media channel who work with the artist, Clear Channel UK, who may be able to assist you.
That confirms Clear Channel owns the billboard. All future complaints should be sent to them: https://www.clearchannel.co.uk/contact.

[–]Cyb3rd31ic_Citiz3n 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
If you follow the Web address on the billboard it takes you to an artists website. . This artist is a deliberate provocateur with the goal "to inspire debate" through strong images and language that can be considered controversial. The fact that we, as a sub and a movement, got upset by it is the point. We got Trolled but only because we know its a bullshit statement, it's to get Joe Blogs on the street to think about it.
[–]jive_twerky 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
Maybe that is true. But the goal of "inspiring debate" could just as easily and probably far more effectively be achieved if it was the other side being subject. For example: a massive billboard saying something like "all women are liars", referencing the increasing frequency of false rape allegations in today's society.
This "artist" chose the safest side for them. If they had made women the target they'd already be cancelled and the billboard would be gone.
This, to me, makes it propaganda. It doesn't inspire debate. It simply piles more crap on men who are already fighting an uphill battle. Things like Google not running a doodle for International Mens Day, unequal family laws that favour women, things of that nature that, when called out, are met with a barrage of yells of "patriarchy, bigots and fragile males" from feminists and Leftists.
[–]Cyb3rd31ic_Citiz3n 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Except that's not going to do anything except get the screachers to tear it down, more articles about sexism, further blaming men. They are the ones in the dominent position and their egos are fragile as fuck. By putting up this image most people KNOW the statement is wrong, but why it is wrong maybe not so much so and that's where it forces people to think. Also, he has done ones discussing women through feminist talking points... And phrased it in such a manner as to get people to consider meritocracy, statistics and what constitutes equality. Now I can't speak for the artist or their overall decision for why they chose the words they did but it absolutely got the job done.
[–]Oncefa2 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm not impressed by the images used in the article.
Not saying I don't like the idea of "provocative art" but the ones shown in that article fail at accomplishing this for most of the same reasons that parent brought up.
[–]Cyb3rd31ic_Citiz3n 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I mean, it could be they fail to you because you've already got a strong sence of the issues but to those who don't it should stir an emotional reaction within them, forcing them to engage with the words themselves. This artist is playing a dangerous game.
[–]SupahSpankeh -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah.
This is art designed to provoke discussion and disruption. The artist is deliberately stating that all men are dangerous to promot discussion about which men are dangerous and if it's actually just men or what. It's similar to Cunningham's Law. He knows it's wrong.
Screaming "reeeee" and running to the ASA is a testament to this movements inability to think coherently.
I do completely agree with you here, and the reaction many people are having is extremely kneejerk and not well considered. That's not the day the artist is doing something which is going to guarantee the discussion swings in our favour but it absolutely gets people to consider this more. And ultimately, we are in the right on this one and folk will come to this conclusion. Even general Feminists don't agree men as a whole are not inherently violent, even if the radical ones do and are pushing that narrative. It's important to the reputation of our movement to be better than the screachers. I hope some of the people who have downvoted your comment reconsider.
[–]Islamism2 points 4 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't think this is under the ASAs jurisdiction. It's not actually advertising a product or service.

This from artist Martin Firrell
Martin Firrell is a French public artist who stimulates debate in public space to promote positive social change. He uses language to engage directly with the public with the aim of making the world more humane. His work has been summarised as 'art as debate'.
It a series of billboards. from his work which also includes this billboard which says men are really great
Power and Gender (Men) 6 Digital Billboards, UK, January to March 2019 The Power and Gender (Men) series examines the changing archetype of masculinity, the impact of social conditioning on men's emotional responses, and the characteristics of power when held by men rather than women.
Power and Gender (Men)
6 Digital Billboards, UK, January to March 2019
The Power and Gender (Men) series examines the changing archetype of masculinity, the impact of social conditioning on men's emotional responses, and the characteristics of power when held by men rather than women.
'Art as debate' is obviously his justification for pushing his agenda via billboards. Billboards aren't a debate, they are a lecture.
Edit: more info about the 'art'

Martin Firrell - All Men Are Dangerous - 2019
This text (which first appeared in a projection by the artist at Tate Britain in 2006) uses the term 'men' ambiguously.
The work may be advising caution in relation to men in particular (excluding women) or it may be using the word 'men' to imply all mankind.
The 'dangerousness' may be subtle and diffuse like the risk-taking that caused the financial crisis in 2008 or the growing impact of climate change.
The work includes an image of Eugen Sandow the world's first professional body builder.
Sandow measured the proportions of statues in museum collections in order to develop his own physique to resemble the Greek ideal.
Sandow's face is obscured indicating that it is the symbolism of the ideal, rather than Sandow himself, which is of interest to the artist.
This artwork is part of socialart.work, a mass public art project by public artist Martin Firrell calling for greater social justice.
It aims to create debate about power and gender, women's equality and masculinity, alternative forms of economic and social organisation, black power, and solidarity between people from different backgrounds and ethnicities.
It includes posters, publications and events supported in 2018-19 by the artist's residency with leadingOut of Home media company Clear Channel UK.

All Men Are Dangerous
2016
All Men Are Dangerous was commissioned by Amy Lamé and Duckie! for Tate Britain. The work was created originally against the backdrop of two major conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
There was widespread sentiment that these wars were, in fact, essentially colonial in motivation and illegal according to international law.
The work reflects on the connection between violence, belief and masculinity, and the importance of differentiating between similar sounding ideas like 'security' and 'liberty', particularly in fear-filled and politically volatile times.
Popular comment of the period suggested that Western populations should be prepared to sacrifice some liberties in return for greater security. This line of thinking seems more in the interests of governments than the populations they serve; there is no evidence that the sacrifice of one aspect of civil life leads to the attainment of the other.

Just because someone can be dangerous doesn’t mean they are. A woman with a gun/knife etc can be just as dangerous. And that’s not the point. It says all men are dangerous. If it said all woman re dangerous would you also agree? Or all woman are evil? Or sluts? I sure hope you don’t. I just don’t understand how someone can see that and say “yep, he isn’t wrong. We are and so what”. Just dude nvm

I personally said "all humans are" in my post above. That includes women.
So yes I would agree with that.
Its something others should remember when they think they can push us all around.
Why do you think all people are dangerous? Or do you mean all people have the capacity to be dangerous?
It's not like the average person is a hardened criminal or something.

Most certainly. This is something that I've been working out in my head a lot. They are both under 2 years of age now. I believe if I show them love and be a great father I can at least be a positive example for men to them and they will be intelligent enough to see through the media propaganda.

I completely get where you're coming from, but I guarantee you that every fucking feminist out there is going to take the posts here out of context like they always do and claim we're all encouraging violence. Even though it was those retards that put the billboard up in the first place, because only they would.
It's going to be Sargon's "I wouldn't even rape you" comment all over again.
[–]wookiez 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I hope they do (feminists taking this out of contxt). Feminists are a dangerous bunch. It's too bad our side can't make common cause, and would rather gets digs in against supposed allies, rather than making a difference in the world.
Go be the change you want to see. Me? I've been living rent free in another's head due to split family conflict. I'm as dangerous as I need to be, and I like talking about it with others. Helping other men through this shit is a good thing.
[–]Orange__Julius -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

No, tell me why saying I wouldn't even rape you is a bad thing, go on, this should be funny, by the way, this was in response to Jess Phillips going on about rape threats on twitter because she was trying to stir up trouble online and had no proof so because Sargon knew what she was doing he made a statement of non-intent as a joke.

Okay, wait a minute because I admit I've misunderstood you but unfortunately if I have this is going to make you look even worse to me. Are you suggesting that simply pointing out that men are too nice and compliant in other words pushovers that it is somehow a bad thing that men should stand up for themselves more and be 'capable' of being dangerous? The word they're you absolutely missed.
That is actually worse than whining about the Sargon quote. Your whole fucking sense of safety operates on the idea that men are willing and able to be dangerous in order to keep you safe that's what the conversation was about. Who are the first people you go to when you're in danger? It's the police and the armed forces, the majority of them all dangerous men.
You really need to get your fucking act together and yes I misunderstood you, mainly because I naively thought despite my comments surely there wouldn't be an idiot who goes out of their way to be offended by this. Thanks though, you've just reduced my faith in humanity ever so slightly, men do need to be more dangerous and capable, they need to learn to stand up for themselves, our societies as we know them simply won't survive if they don't.
You are definitely part of the problem, you rely on men being dangerous for your personal safety and so do these feminists that are attacking that yet you're acting people are encouraging violence by responding to this shit and saying yes it's a good thing men are dangerous.

UK sounds like a fucking nightmare to live in.
You can't defend yourself. You can't own anything that would even let you defend yourself. You're surrounded by refugees who refuse to assimilate into the culture. You don't have free speech. If you're a man you're hated. You're under constant government surveillance.
It's basically dystopian.
At some point the normal people there are going to have enough and it's not gonna be pretty
[–]CommitSudokuPerverts 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you go on vacation and someone breaks into your home and starts living there you can't call the police to arrest them. You have to spend months HOMELESS YOURSELF and PAY LEGAL FEES to spend MONTHS getting them evicted. And until a few years ago they faced no criminal punishment. But you still have no means of recovering your costs. If you own a commercial property and they do this it's not even a crime.
And if someone sues you and you lose but appeal they send high court enforcement agents and the police to shake you down, even confiscating your property, before the appeal is even heard, much less ruled on.

You are God damned we are. Or we should strive to be.
"a good man is not he who is incapable of violence but he who is capable of great violence and chooses not to (...) "
Or something like that. Now... I know that's not what they meant.
Hell yes we are. Men; do not let anyone convince you otherwise. You have power to influence the world around you. More than that, you have the power to create whatever situations you want to find yourself in. Think about that; if you aren't happy where you are, you can ( and should ) change that, but not only that, you are inherently capable of it via whatever means are necessary.
You're goddamn right I'm dangerous, and I'll use that power against any who would do harm to me and mine. Forget that at your own peril.

It's not an uncommon pattern. People tend to define their weaknesses as virtues to justify not becoming stronger.
If you're not dangerous, you're incapable of doing harm to those that would harm your loved ones.
