I am a student at the Camas High and I want to say a few things about this case. Whatever subreddit this is on I hope that no one downvotes anathors opinion unless the suspect is clearly being toxic. I stand that what you say online should not have this great of an effect on your personal life. That being said under school policy the principal should be fired.
And before I go into my reasoning I am not a huge fan of Kobe but I heard of the tragedy and have informed my self of the allegation. So unlike other students I think I have had a neutral experience with her leadership, and have a neutral position on Kobe. But I can explain why it would be wise for her to be fired, or anathor outcome I would appreciate more, but would be too risky for the school to take right now.
While I do try to uphold what you do online should not have such a great effect on your reputation, under school policy the best action is to fire her. She herself numerous times has handed out suspensions for poor online behavior. If she was to be let go this would mean by the schools logic that any student could have made that post and receive no punishment.
Secondly, I have heard the point raised that we should let her go as her post was a mistake while other suspensions were about blatant toxicity and racism. One, she is an adult and scientifically her brain is more developed, she should have a better understanding of the schools policy, when she is one of the forerunners for bad online behavior. Two, the content of the post one could argue is even more offensive, arguing that 9 peoples death was karma for a dropped rape allegation. Even if Kobe was t by e only one who died I would think it is too far to claim someone you did not know personally deserved to die, about a case you had little experience with.
I have also heard arguments here that she should be forgiven as the online humiliation is enough. This also can be refuted with multiple points. One, she in one of her email apologies said feel free to judge her as she judged Kobe. So she herself admitted sympathy should not get in the way of her sentance. Secondly, if we ought to sympathize with her then we should sympathize with the suspended student for near identical cases. This would go for me too, I received 2 detentions for accidentally getting on to a porn site while looking for an unblocked game on a school computer. I should then by that logic be forgiven as my incident was an accident, and being humiliated in front off staff and my parents was enough of a punishment. Thirdly, if we sympathize with a criminal and why he committed a crime, why would we still not follow up with a punishment?
Anathor arguement I hear come up often is that since a student at the school was never expelled, she should not be fired as no permanent punishment was given to a student. One, again she is an adult and should know what school policy is on the situation. Two, being fired is not permanent, if anathor position values her talents over her post then she could be employed again.
Because I have not addressed this point enough I am going to directly say my stances on the post. The arguement that the post was just her opinion. One, even if was just her opinion, it was strong enough to have a threat to her made, so clearly it is not just a "unique take". Two, as I have stated earlier, using karma to justify death is wrong, regardless of the situation, and even less so in this case as I have been informed of what he gave back after the allegation. Even if it was to save face, he still did things for other humans and I as a avid free speech supporter have the idea that one action does not determine your character.
To reiterate, think either there are two reasonable outcomes for the school. Any others would be hypocritacal and treating the students as unintelligent, which I do not think the district believes. One, she is fired and school policy policy stays the same. Punishments are handed out for online behavior. And the example for the school will be set in stone, so no student or staff can make the same excuse. I personally do not favor this outcome but is only of of two logical outcomes. The other which I would prefer, yet I don't see the school performing is not firing her and dropping policies that address online behavior. The school would still warn students about online behavior but will not hold it accountable to them.
You can check my profile and see a certain post about Kobe made about half a year ago, I do not think I should get in trouble for that post, yet if I was I think that my principal should be held to the same standard.
My name is Carl Sadewasser, a 10th grader attending Camas High and I think if the school was to remain reputable she should be fired. I do not like the outcome but is the best I can see the school making.
