What bugs me most about these situations is that the proposed idea of spousal support is to support a career that the other spouse would have had. I highly doubt she would have had a salary over 276 thousand a year. Without even counting the 400 k inital and 120 k child support.

This is exactly why young men need to be taught to be defiant against marriage . It doesn't matter how long you've known someone, the law allows for perverse and unjust peonage through absurd court ordered support amounts. A single woman even with a few kids does not need that amount of money to survive let alone live comfortably . These laws need to be abolished, and activists need to confront the cowards and parasites that hide behind the law to steal . Tax payers would never approve of someone getting that amount of money with welfare so if support laws are designed with welfare in mind, why the hell is it acceptable to force this on individuals going through divorce?

She got around 20%, not half. Also, the reason they settled out of court, could also have to do with other private agreements. We should consider these too, and not automatically bash the woman. She was married to him for 16 years, before he became famous. I heard she helped him build his brand and product. his dog's death could also be a factor in the attempted suicide, having nothing to do with his wife. Its just my opinion, but this does seem fairer than other divorces.

The suicide attempt probably had more to do with getting divorced and losing his dog than about the money, since the money is not much for Cesar.

I don't know what his net worth was at the time of divorce, but given that they'd been together for the entirety of his career, she, in theory, would be "entitled" to half of it. Instead she just got $400k, most likely because the settlement was more focused on her long term support. His income is $170k/month, so 13.5% in spousal support and 6% in child support (for two kids) is not much at all. I'm sure there are tons of guys on this sub who would be ecstatic if their ex wives were only getting 20% of their income.

Is it a stupefyingly large amount of money? Yes. Is it a completely unfair division of wealth/income after a long term marriage? Not really. The only reason the numbers are so high is because Cesar's income/wealth is so high.

It seems a little disengenuous to make out that the money had anything to do with his depression, and not just perhaps the fact that his wife left him and his dog died in pretty close proximity.

In fact, the way he talks about his dog suggests that probably had a tougher impact than any amount of money.

Millan attempted divorce WAY before the divorce was finalized and before anything monetary was figured out.

Feb 2010: His dog dies March 2010: Wife tells him he wants a divorce May 2010: Attempted overdose April 2012: The divorce is finalized and the money is hashed out.

Don't try to lead people to think he attempted because of the money. The dude was broken-hearted. That is it.

Somehow I doubt there's a causal link between how much money he owed her and his attempted suicide. This title could probably be written better in order to erase the attempted link between owed money and attempted suicide.

The wikipedia article in question states he attempted suicide after his wife left him and his dog died. It must have been a rough time for him emotionally, and although owing a lot of money to someone could definitely be considered a possible reason for something like this, somehow I have to believe that the emotional stress of the situations he found himself in with regards to his family and dog -- essentially losing everyone he ever loved all at once -- had more to do with his actions than how much money he was going to have to give his wife.
