‘Perpetrators will usually start abusing their victim by limiting her personal freedoms, monitoring her every move, and stripping away her control of her life; physical violence often comes later.
‘Women’s Aid has campaigned to have this recognised in law, and we are thrilled that this has now happened.’
Nope. I had a five year trial for emotional abuse. My girlfriend went to the police with one email where I said she's probably cheating with some other guy, and a completely unsubstantiated claim that I had emotionally blackmailed her into dating for the last 6 months of our relationship.
So I went to the police with over 30 accusations from her that I was cheating with other women, her admitting that I treated her well and she never felt afraid of me, her admitting that she had falsely accused me of hitting her to my friends, her bragging that she regularly read my email, her admitting that she regularly wrote to my parents and friends and told them to stay away, her admitting to punching me, her admitting to stealing my mail and clothes from my apartment, her threatening to kill herself if I left, her begging me to marry her, her demanding that I get her pregnant, her complaining that we didn't have sex often enough, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
The judge kind of riffled through it and said "well, sir, she's not the one on trial for emotional abuse, you are, so I don't see why this would be relevant". Then they got a court psychologist to say that she was being "ironic", and convicted me.
I feel like the guys number should be more like 60% not 16%. Most men are abused like this but don't think it's abuse, they just say "Hey, that's marriage!"
