After adjusting for factors such as each patient's age, gender and income and the doctors’ ages, training and hospital location, they found that 11.07% of patients treated by female internists died within a month, while 11.49% of those treated by male internists did.

The one logical variable to control for is "severity of the problem causing the hospital stay". A possible, and perhaps likely, explanation is that female doctors tend to get the "easier" patients while male doctors tend to get the more challenging patients.

Someone comes in with a broken hip and lives another 60 days, who cares? The broken hip likely had little to do with the direct cause of death. Someone comes in with brain hemorrhaging and heart failure and dies in 2 days? Yeah, saving them would have been a miracle.

I'd like to know how many doctors of each sex. If you have 2:1 male to female and less than half a percent disparity with that much of a total participant disparity it would show you are MORE likely to die with a female doctor. Further if they decided to make the number of Doctors the same sample size and had to select male doctors to do so, what evidence do we have that they didn't intentionally select male doctors who would give this result?
