I'm not a lawyer but that sounds like a pretty good case of unlawful termination to me.

Do email or sms count as correspondence protected by law like regular mail? If so she could be facing federal charges for unlawfully intercepting someone else's mail.

Seriously? Isn't the mother the one who should be in some hot water here? First of all she is looking at her daughters cell phone, who is a 20 year old adult. Secondly, she brought things to light that should belong in private. It sounds to me like this football couch has a whole lot of legal action he could take against a few different people, the scholl and the mom being the initial targets.

If I was a teacher I would hire a PI, on my first day, to dig up as much dirt on my superiors as I could afford. Hell, they should recommend that to teachers in college. Tell them to put together a 'rainy day' fund just for black mail. Then again, is it really black mail if someone is going to air your dirty laundry, even though it's legal, and you tell them to put it back in the wash or their shit's going in the yard?

I think we need to turn the non-discrimination laws around and basically say unless you are 1) not doing your job or 2) performing an illegal activity in a way that intersects with your duties (ie. using work equipment to break some law) you can't be fired. Instead of a whitelist of reasons you can't fire for, we need a blacklist of the only reasons you can.

Civil suit against the mother. 2 legally of age, consenting adults, she had no right to go through her daughter's cell phone.

To head off the people saying "but what if she was paying for the phone?" - If it was an envelope addressed to the daughter, delivered by the USPS to a mailbox the mother was paying for, it'd still be wrong.

This would be an interesting legal fight if the cell phone is in mom's name. The coach probably should have used better judgment, considering the daughter probably lives at home during the summer. Not that he should be fired, but he definitely brought this upon himself.
