First of all, anyone who commits a capital offense is violating gender norms.

Second, quite clearly, do incur a death penalty as a woman you would have to commit an act of almost singular egregiousness. This one qualifies, as does the crime of that woman we heard of that Trump did not pardon (I think she cut out a baby from the stomach of a pregnant woman).

Third, by no conceivable metric are women even close to as likely to incur such a punishment for comparable crimes.

Fourth, in jury systems especially, it has historically been difficult to convict women at all, let alone impose harsh punishment. In fact, as I read some time, the reason the US (New York) started allowing female jurors was because of a string of incidents where an all male jury failed to convict female murderers.

So while I am vehemently against the death penalty, turning this into a gender issue to the detriment of women does not even pass the sniff test - but panders to our instinct to protect them and to make excuses where we can.

There might be some gender aspects that are indeed worthy of looking into, apart from sentencing disparity (among genders, social class, and race). The psychopathy, or absence of empathy and impulse control, that strikes me as necessary to commit crimes like this, is much more common among men (or at least the kind of psychopathy that prompts people to kill without compunction - many argue that lack of empathy among women is more likely to manifest itself in symptoms that we associate with vulnerable narcissism or borderline personality disorder). So looking into outliers like this is indeed important.

In general, though, the more conservative and traditional the country - the less likely it is to execute women. So finding India, ranking very high on social conservatism, among the exceptions is indeed surprising.

CNN is a woke media channel. It will do anything to save women, (well in India not minorities though) from all negative repurcussions.

We literally had a woman (Mahima Kukreja) put a false me too on a dude(Utsav Chakraborty), an entire company was closed down after it(AIB) and after it came out that he was innocent, CNN made a comment "There are some tumors he's innocent, though none of them are verifiable". When mahima made her point the comment was more akin "Women still have to face harassment and sexual advances from men. When will disgusting men like him stop harassing our daughters"

We also had a case where a guy literally hanged himself to death after a girl leaked a gaslighted, out of context and falsified group chat online.

We also have a case where a lady broke her own nose to not pay for a food delivery.

If you see CNN's reactions on these, you'll most likely bleach your eyes. Don't get me wrong, india still has a shit ton of patriarchal gap. Women are opressed in many situations, but when you pull things like these and let them run the women advantage card, it's not only despicable but takes trustworthiness away from you.

I've stopped watching CNN. If I really do need news, I follow Faye D'Souza on instagram. She at least gives unbiased information

As everyone knows, it's a woman. Her life is more valuable than the lives of the combined thousands of men who've been executed in India since 1955. Classic case of male disposability.

In 2019, in India, a girl, Priyanka Reddy, was gang raped and burned to death by a gang of rapist's. In the same time period, more than 50 men burned to death in a construction facility in India. Yet there was absolutely no support for the 50+ men who died and for their families, but that one girl got global attention, and rightfully so, but the fact that 50+ men being burned was not covered by any significant media (except in the corners of regional newspapers) just shows the reality of the valueless lives of us, men.

To be fair, it’s the woman’s attorney that blamed the patriarchy, not CNN.

Also, advocacy on her behalf seems to be by groups that are opposed to any death penalty.

The one quote by the author that was particularly disgusting was when they said that executing a woman would be a step in the wrong direction (on the quest to abolish the death penalty) as if executing a man isn’t equally a step in the wrong direction. Reinforcing that a man’s life is not worth as much as a woman’s.

Remote Rural India is very complex variety of tiny different sub cultures & cliques.
