Demoted for taking a paternity leave? That's ridiculous!

I'd prefer companies to provide the option of paternity leave to their male employees. To avail it or not (and the number of days) is left to the employee and the employer.
I don't like the idea of "paid leave" no matter what label. If you're on leave, you don't get paid (simple as that). Companies already provide a number of days of paid leave per year. You can utilise it the way you want.
All other things remaining the same, a man who didn't avail paternity leave has contributed to a company more than a man who did. So obviously, the former should have an advantage. Also, if paternity leave is granted to all men unconditionally, what about those who can't have children, choose not to, or have many children? Isn't that discrimination?

I'm really glad to see this, Japan has a worldwide reputation for bad work/life balance and it's good to see the Japanese sticking up for themselves generally on these issues.

...And the population of Japan is plummeting, so here is yet another fine reason for Japanese men to forgo fatherhood.
