It is against the law for a person to be paid more than another person for the exact same job based on gender, race, sexual orientation or religion! If a man works in an office and has the same position as a woman but gets paid more than her, then it's against the law. THAT would then be a reason to go on a crusade. However, this "wage gap" is based on ALL women and ALL men in ALL jobs in the ENTIRE country. Then yes, there is a difference. That difference is quantifiable. Claiming that women should be paid more for having different lower paying jobs than men is just stupid. However, a woman raising a child is different from a woman going off from work for a couple of months to recuperate from giving birth. Those who take maternity leave should be getting full salary for their time away. That is all I would be willing to bend for. But a mother staying home for 10-18 years? How do you want to balance the "wage gap" if women stay at home? Do you want to give them checks in mail?

Better than the usual propaganda since he actually addresses the critique but very manipulative as usual.

It is incredible that women being the means of child production is somehow made to be an disadvantage. Having an extra option is an advantage and nobody is forcing women to have children. You could make the argument that women's monopoly on child production brings with it a responsibility to bring children to life, and that women shouldn't be disadvantaged for living up to that responsibility. That however, wouldn't be an argument for equal pay for equal work, but for that the pay should be artificially increased to compensate for the disadvantages that comes with childbearing.

I love Oliver's program, but I disagreed with him on this segment. He entertained, but ultimately dismissed the idea that the wages are different due to choices. Honestly, I was pretty swayed by the 96% figure--that's within the realm of just being off due to data collection methods, etc. It is essentially 100%. It's close enough to be really pleasing from a sexual equality standpoint. His rant about "x is 'pretty much y" was a big stretch.

That said, I was still laughing through this segment. Had some pretty good jokes, even though the premise was flawed.

It would take huge amounts of guts to oppose the feminist message on TV. I just can't imagine him laying into modern feminism in the same way he lays into everything else. He would be signing his own death warrant.

John Oliver cherry-picks his sources, and of course, a lot of people don't find accuracy and intellectual honesty humor-material. I'd like to ask John Oliver what he thinks about the "Work-related death gap": men die directly because of work 15.7 times more than women. Women represent only 6% of work-related deaths. If men are doing the most dangerous jobs, and dying because of it, isn't it expected that they make more money? What the feminists don't realize is that to end the hypothetical wage-gap, more women would have to die in work, since they don't take on the most dangerous, physical and psychological demanding jobs. Isn't that a fact?

The biggest mistake people make in assessing the gap is assuming that all factors are measuring and quantifiable.

They're not, so seeing a remaining gap still isn't where the conversation ends, and it all boils down to how one defines "equal work", which politicians don't tell you because they'd rather have their audience project their own definition onto the politician's claims.

It's funny how some people can't see the bias in things like The Daily Show or Mr. Oliver's new program until that bias lines up against one of their pet causes. Pick a topic on which you agree with the Jon Stewarts and John Olivers. Research what your opposition actually says about that topic...not just the fringe nutters, but the average person. Then watch a segment on one of these shows dealing with that topic and try to see it through the eyes of the people with whom you disagree.

This is nothing new. These pieces have always been very skewed. You're just now realizing it only because they've finally kicked you in the teeth on something that matters to you. Next week you'll be back to giggling along as they smugly tell the people you disagree with what a bunch of backwards idiots they are.

John Oliver is an idiot, so no surprise there. He's interested in pushing forth a right wing Democrat agenda, and that includes feminism. See e.g. his comments on global warming or the death penalty. It's pretty simple.
