Men with eating disorders are suffering discrimination because of NHS same sex ward rules. Hospitals are prioritising single sex wards for female patients.

As a male who is currently in treatment for an eating disorder, it is incredibly hard. It is legitimately 99% female, and a significant portion of them seem to hate all men. It’s really a struggle, and this article really bothers me.

Canadian Male who's gone to ED treatment.

My experience was unique because I went to a residential-style treatment centre vs a hospital one (which I've heard really suck).

As far as eating disorders go, men are definitely not being left behind, at least in Canada. If anything, for the first time in my life I felt like I may have been given preferential treatment in terms of wait times. I assumed that male ED data was very valuable for their research.

For residence, I was the only male for half my stay. I got a single room but it was honestly the best outcome. There were posters everywhere about males ED awareness.

The staff were extremely educated on male Ed's. The problem currently lies in the population not seeking out medical help due to stigma, and not the available services. The case might be different in the US. It may also differ in the hospital-ward setting (I don't know).

Before I got into residential treatment, I felt the need to disclose to them that a woman they've treated, that I met from an ED support group, developed an unhealthy obsession with me and threatened me with blackmail promising she would falsely accuse me of rape when I asked her to leave me alone. They asked if a had a restraining order as proof and I told them I didn't want to file one unless she made good on her promise as I didnt want stir the pot. I thought for sure this admission of mine would hurt my chances of getting treatment in a female majority residence, but it didn't. They treated me very fairly.

Moral Panics And Why They Matter

It's worth remembering how back in the 1980/90s there was a real Moral Panic and Social/Media Insanity over Anorexia and women apparently all dying from it. Even Gloria Steinem got in on the act claiming that "in this country alone, about 150,000 females die of anorexia each year." ^\1])

In this country alone, according to the American Anorexia and Bulimia Association, about 150,000 females die of anorexia each year - and they're often the female version of "the best an the brightest": intelligent and sensitive young women who want to use their talents, and yet are still in an economic class and culture that pressure women to be decorative and "perfect". As Naomi Wolf asks on behalf of her contemporaries, "How would America react to the mass self-immolation by hunger of it's favourite sons?"

Steinem in her arrogance just republished the same junk in the 25th anniversary edition of the book and did not correct a single error. She has maintained that the error was due to one of her Underlings failing to proof read correctly and check sources quoted from other sources.

Christina Hoff Sommers famously debunked this Woozle in her book Who Stole Feminism, much to Steinem's annoyance.^\2])

The Feminist Hysteria machine, media and the general public are still programed with the Myth that Women are dying of eating disorders at a massively distorted rate, and that men are unaffected.

As Camille Paglia and Christina Hoff Sommers wryly observed, "..if 150,000 of these girls where dying, you would need.. to have ambulances on hand at places where they gather like Wellesley College graduation and like you do at major sporting events. .. it's funny, but no one caught the error."..."No one caught it. The media was totally servile! Every word that came out of Gloria Steinem's mouth or Patricia Ireland's mouth is treated as gospel truth." ^\3])

This woozle has left so many primed to see Eating Disorders as only female the discrimination and negation of men is Institutionalised. It has take over 25 years, more than a generation for "REALITY" to even get the door answered, and now due to Gynocentric Bias men are having to fight to get through the open door.

I had an ed through all my teen years, I was in psychoatry for that time too and they some didn’t realize I had an ed despite my weight being incredibly low. I try not to be too resentful, it’s difficult when I have been permanently effected by it.

The rules, drawn up in 2010, say male and female patients should not be housed on the same wards, in a bid to protect patient dignity.

Two things:

How's absurd would it be if all hospital sections became single sex. This was a stupid idea that pandered to sensitive flowers.

Whoever drafted this likely knew that hospitals would have to phase out men sections, since more women have eating disorders, and didn't care. This is called sexism and misandry.
