The thing is women are way pickier and more superficial than most men, on average, however women tend to often be hypocrites and pretentious about it not willing to admit it.

A man most of the time will simply say and admit they were physically attracted to a woman. Woman won't generally acknowledge that they were attracted to a man's status or wealth, or often not even appearance.

You see use any dating app, most of them allow 500 characters or sometimes words. Generally less than 10 pictures. That isn't going to actually tell you shit about most people's personality. The fact that people then claim to be looking for a "deeper connection" is just generally pretentious.

Generally it comes down to women being pickier than men, there's a term for that called Hypergamy.

Objectively speaking from an outside perspective, males of most vertebrates are more aesthetic looking in their natural habitats. Be it lions, silverback gorillas, peacocks, gaurs, Mandarin Ducks, Guppy Fish, Mandrills (males are the most colourful monkeys), etc., Fit human males have a more imposing size, greater detail in their bodies due to the musculature, sharper, more chiseled features, longer eyelashes and greater facial symmetry (tables 1 and 2).

Women "look" more aesthetic because they spend more time putting on makeup and other such things but if both genders invested equal amount of time in their appearance or if they were both in their natural habitat, male humans would be more aesthetic like all other vertebrates. There's a reason why most ancient civilizations had sculptures of naked men, not women. You can't find a female equivalent of the Statue of David or Laocoon and His Sons.

The relationship thing really does just boil down to the vanity of women. You can find many genuinely nice and good women but they have adapted that way because they aren't all that attractive physically. Thus they have to develop a personality.

This is why I'm 100% convinced that body positivity is actually a thing pushed by attractive women. Because the more women are closer together in attractiveness the less they stand out which would force them to have to have other skills and also a better personality to compete.

Attractive women benefit from having a hierarchy in attractiveness that's why every friend group of women has the one slightly less attractive one.

There are so many things that go into this, and I think a part of it is the conception of a sexual partner as a staus symbol, or an indicator of one's own worth. This drives women to feel they need to get a ''top man'' because having a top man means that they themselves have worth.

I am a woman, and personally, I tune out 98% of men because I can. In a world in which I had less sexual agency, I would probably not have learned to just categorically ignore most men ( in terms of sexual attraction/as potential romantic partners, that is). For me, it's just a heuristic that allows me to shorten the search for a potential partner and cast a narrower net.

However for me, I'm at an advantage relative to other women (I think) because my ''thing'' that I go for isn't really high-demand guys, aka the guys that most women prefer and compete for, rather a specific subset that I personally find attractive, for which there is less competition. I personally prefer guys who are about 5 foot 6, and there's way less of a run on them than on 6 foot guys (this does come with its own problems, but that's another story.)

Something about this that I find really interesting is how much other people seem to tie my worth to the person I'm seeing, and in many cases, feel some kind of indignant, almost moral outrage that I'm not dating ''as well as I could.'' The pushback, ridicule, and straight up cruelty I get from both men and women about choosing to date men who I think are attractive vs who most women find attractive never ceases to shock and confuse me. People aren't just surprised about that: they are angry. The thing that frustrates me most is people who refuse to beleive that I am even am attracted me to the person I'm seeing, and insist I must be seeing that person for money or to get attention. In short, people refuse to believe that I find someone attractive that they don't find attractive.

I grew up in a rural area with limited exposure to mass media, and I didn't really begin my sexual life until my post-college/early professional years, so I think that's part of the reason why I was largely unaffected by a lot of cultural messaging and pushback from peers. But I think had I had a more normal youth, I probably would have had my tastes shaped and molded a lot more by outside influence.

Um well, my age range for cuteness is probably 20-55, with the % decreasing with age. Take out all the overweight dudes (sorry, not into it), and that's cutting out 2/3 of the US population. I think part of this is that men are more looking for options from a evolutionary perspective. Always like yup that'll do that'll do that'll do. We are programed to want to spread the seed as far and wide as possible. I have two kids and I would be lying if I didn't admit I see tons of women that if it was 200,000 years ago when relationships were just them banging and then like the group raises all the kids of the group then why wouldn't dudes be willing to bang about every girl that would let them. While the group actively stops the men that have problems from access to the women.

A woman has to be looking to see if it is worth it. He could be a hundred different things that is not gonna lead to a good baby that she will raise. What if he has bad lungs and can't run. then her kid might have that issue and its a problem. or maybe he can't eat some food and it makes it harder for them to forage so its a liability if the kid has that too and then dies all that pregnancy and everything for nothing.

So women need to like investigate the guy and see all these things and that turned into modern society where the top 2% of men get to bang the 70% of women. The 90% of women want the top 2% of men and see all the others as trash.

Now society is super complex and any minor thing can be cancel worthy. You have 4's putting on make up thinking that makes them a 9. You have men just being alive and those 4's now think they are too hot for a man that is a 4. its an even match up but everyone wants a 10.

One thing to bear in mind about this is that the question refers solely to looks, not about general attractiveness, though that does get somewhat blurred in the comments.

If it's part of normal human sexual dimorphism that women, on average, aren't really bothered so much about looks, so be it.

It's not really clear whether this ends up being about women having ludicrously high standards, or whether it's just that they don't often have their heads turned by a particularly visually attractive man. Clearly they don't have that high a standard, or there'd be a lot less procreating couples than there are, notwithstanding the fact there are less than ever.

What may explain this is simply the difference between what people like to think about themselves, what they're willing to say about themselves, what they claim to do, and what they actually do in reality. There's a strong social taboo against women being promiscuous, so they're likely to self-report being pickier than they actually are to avoid being seen as too easy.

One of the things this sub does is treating women like men with regard to relationships.

Sure, women like hot guys. But that is not the primary driver in what they find attractive. A guy that has a certain way about how he carries himself, the way he talks and how he interacts with others is going to stand out much more than any "cute" guy in a room.

Nobody is going to look at a picture of me and say I am conventionally attractive or hot. I might get a "cute". But I still get approached by women out in public.

But the upside is that it is much easier to change a woman's mind. I'm 34 and I can't tell you how many times I've seen a woman with a long laundry list of requirements throw it out when she felt a good vibe. Trust me when I say - if you're in the top quartile of men - that is enough looks-wise as long as you remember the batting average of baseball hall of famers (around 300 - meaning less than 3 in 10). If you ask out 10 women and get even 2 meetups (I won't count just getting her number) - you are doing pretty good.

It doesn't matter that much if a woman doesn't find you attractive, you can easily change that by being one or a few of these, funny charming, socially fluent, rich, fit, well. dressed. Then work on yourself if you already aren't? What's the problem? So many women already do something to be as attractive as possible. Most men don't. This is why only the 2% who do are attractive

Go watch some Andrew Tate and man up. Women aren’t attracted to physicalities like we are. It’s the secondary traits that get them. This should be good news to you because then, even if you aren’t very attractive, you still have a chance if you level up various areas of your personality. Looks…? you are stuck with: everything else…? you can improve.

I find the imbalance highly problematic.

I wouldn't really be a problem that only 1% of men are attractive to each woman if the men they were attracted to was effectively random. In that case, each man would have about the same number of women interested in him and could find matches. The problem comes from that 1% being aimed mostly at the same pool of men and a pool of men at the bottom with no women attracted to them.

There's no solution to this, especially without limiting freedom to choose. In the past, monogamy (one partner for life) was one way of compromising. This forced the guys at the top to pick one of the oodles of women interested in him. The women not picked then had to move down a notch and try to find someone. This trickled down so that even guys toward the bottom still got a match. Probably not the happiest of marriages, but you got to at least have a family I guess.

Those are mostly women self reporting. There are many problems with this 'study':

Women usually never answer with the truth, but with anything true or false, that will increase their status in their group, or some pre-agreed group truth. Truth has little meaning, and any woman deviating from the consensus is quickly ostracized and removed from the group to maintain the status quo.
Even if a woman is 100% sincere in her answers here, what she consciously consider attractive and what her reptile brain consider attractive are two different persons, often very different persons. She answer with her human brain, but the one in control is always the reptile brain.

I absolutely sensed this was the case years ago. Somewhere along the line I developed a defense. If I saw someone attractive, I would automatically assume she definitely wasn't attracted to me and then I'd stop feeling that way about her.

There was no stand-offish rudeness on my part. It was a head game I played with myself.

Anyway, it became a permanent thing with me. I'm incapable of finding any strange person attractive. It's only if another person is immensely attracted to me and I also know them rather well. Looks have little to do with it.

I don't know if I can recommend other men becoming like me just to level this market of attractiveness. There's definitely downsides like having to feign being more into someone than you really are when starting a relationship.

Anyway, I prefer to remain emotionally stunted in this regard, unnatural as it may be.
