New project to track the erasure of adult male victims in the media

"295 Palestinians, including 42 women and 73 children, were killed by Israeli security forces..."

"The Syrian Civil Defence, known as the White Helmets, said that 32 people, including 5 women and two children, had been killed... "

"at least 243 people, including more than 100 women and children, were killed in Gaza..."

We've all seen these kind of headlines when incidents of violence or crisis are reported in the media. And many of us will be aware of the pernicious anti-male bias which they perpetuate, supporting the idea that women and child victims are more worthy of outrage and sympathy, or that they are automatically innocent and harmless because of their physiology, unlike adult males who can always be assumed to be a potential threat and therefore deserving of violence.

However, I hadn't realised quite how frequent an occurrence they are until I started tracking them. I created a new Twitter account, 'Including women and children', to monitor the media and post instances when this and similar phrases appear in news reporting. Every day I find at least one, and sometimes multiple, articles featuring this phrase published in major news outlets.
