Is it equally wrong for them to have sex with each other?

Not really. The issue isn't so much them having sex, it's them being exposed to emotional and physical manipulation for someone else's benefit at what is supposed to be a protected age.

If a teenager were in a legitimate and healthy relationship with an adult that might be okay. The problem is that this isn't the case. The people that are willing to have sex with them are almost certainly doing it for sexual gratification, to fulfill some kind of unmet emotional need in themselves, to get off on a feeling of power and control, etc. And they're accomplishing this by taking advantage of a young kid and manipulating them from a position of power (which they have by default as an adult). Two kids are much more likely to be on an equal playing field and genuinely interested in each other. Whereas a kid and an adult is more likely to be a fawning kid who idolizes the adult and is deeply in love with them and an adult who is using the kid to meet one of their own needs only to throw them away when they get bored.

It's fun watching folks try and explain why 18 and 24 is OK, but 16 and 20 isn't.

For better or for worse, 18 is the age you're considered an adult. It's when you lose the protections of childhood and have to face the world for yourself. That means, unfortunately, learning to deal with people who seek to manipulate and control you for their own desires. Teenagers in high school who still live with their parents and are still treated as children and essentially protected from everything that might hurt them are probably much less capable of handling this than college students who have been living on their own for a while, for instance. Now, if this were the 1800s when you were given adult responsibilities after puberty, I might be arguing that 14 or 15 is a fine age of consent. I think a 15 year old who has been to war and works to support his family, for instance, has a hugely different mindset from a 15 year old high school student who has his mom make lunch for him every day. That's why the age of consent should vary with society and not biology.

The question of when you should be considered an adult is another question entirely. I actually think it should be higher. But again, not strictly relevant.

Why would it be any different when the criteria for obtaining ID change?

I guess that's a fair point. But I guess this comes back to the point you make about people being treated like children for too long. Being a kid is great. If there was some kind of "maturity test" to be an adult, hell, I'd put it off as long as possible. My argument is that there should be a hard age by which point you're an adult whether you like it or not. It should be a gentle transition to adulthood, but a firm one. And I don't see really any benefit to letting kids become adults before that, to be honest. There's no reason you can't have the maturity level of an adult while still enjoying the protections of childhood for a few more years. Other than special cases involving abusive or negligent parents, I don't see a need. There's no reason kids need to rush away their childhood.

As to making the age of majority higher, I tend to think that the longer we treat people like children, the longer they'll act like children.

This is possibly true. But I would argue that we need to have this age of majority, and make sure kids are ready to be adults when they pass it. Like, absolutely ready. We keep it high to ensure that no one loses protections they might still need before they're ready, but the idea is for you to be weened off needing them while they're still there, just in case.

I think a military draft is evil but it's a good example, from this perspective, of what I mean by that. Being forced into war at 18 is a good motivation for making sure you're absolutely an adult by the time society says you need to be. You're forced to grow up before that just by knowing it's coming, but you're still protected while you do the growing up. Like I said I think the draft is evil but something far less...horrible would still work I think. That way we could raise the age of majority but not raise the age people consider themselves children indefinitely. There's nothing wrong with being considered a child until you turn 20 if you're ready to become a full-fledged adult by that time.

We don't really spend a third of our lives as children. Not going to show my work but I did the math and we spend the first ~22% of our lives as children. Increasing the age to 20 makes this ~25%.

I don't know how to argue with that though. I can't see a way to both insure that 16 year olds who still need to be protected like kids (even if they don't realize it) get that protection, while those that don't can be treated like adults. I think it's better just to make you wait a little longer than to have kids in over their heads and without any chance of getting help. It's not like being a kid is miserable.

This is all kind of beside the point though. My main argument here was that, whatever the age of majority is, the age of consent could be the same. If you're going to call a 16 year old a child then you need to protect them like one because they might not be prepared to handle the situation themselves, and that's your fault for calling them a child.
