Good to see this finally being recognised:

A key underlying issue that has been raised both in this inquiry and also in the

APPG’s previous two reports, is the pervasive male-victim blaming narrative. It

is clear that the phrase ‘toxic masculinity’ is damaging and adds additional

stigma and barriers to male help-seeking.

This damaging narrative suggests that masculinity itself is at fault and that, if

men would only talk more, this would solve their problems.

The previous two APPG reports eschewed this deficit-model and this report

continues with this same approach. The key is that whilst there is a need for

men to talk, and this is increasingly the case, the responsibility should not

primarily rest on their shoulders. It should primarily rest on society, employers

and professionals to understand better the ways men communicate, and then to

listen, ask and act.

From a quick perusal this seems to be really good, it's in-depth and includes a full exploration of the male suicide epidemic. They even deal with the "but women attempt suicide more!" urban myth, and debunk it in a short section, which is good to see happening. Thanks very much for sharing the link!

I've skimmed the document, and most of the stuff in it is blindingly obvious and common knowledge to anyone who's made an honest attempt to consider the situation. The fact that it's been published at all is pretty astonishing to me, although I notice it's received almost no publicity.

The problem with this is that most of the recommendations in that document are things which cannot reasonably be expected to happen given the current political reality. For instance, it recommends doing several things which would specifically benefit men, particularly, but not solely:

- Creating a senior government role with the specific purpose of addressing men's issues;

- Increasing funding targeting issues and research which overwhelmingly affect men;

- Avoiding the use of the phrase "toxic masculinity";

- Bringing more men into psychology (which would displace some of the 85% representation of women)

- Removing female-specific guidance to police when considering enforcement action in family disputes.

All of those will be seen as absolute anathema to womens' rights activists, who will (I confidently predict) leap to preemptively characterise research into men's mental health as outspoken, bigoted, hate-filled and misogynistic wolf-whistles to violence-promoting fascist extremism, or whatever other phrases they can generate from the fridge magnet set entitled "I'm a four hundred pound, blue-haired gender studies graduate, and I think male suicide is great."

I wonder how many of those 85% female psychologists think like that. Given they've all been to college to study a touchy-feely subject, considerably more than average for the female population, I'd guess.

Anyway, the standard answer when the issue of violence against men is raised is "well, it's mainly done by men, so that's OK then." I don't think people of that mindset are ever going to be persuaded to stop saying "toxic masculinity." It's a crucial part of their sense of self. You're more or less asking hardline feminists to grow a third arm. They're never going to do it.

That would be bad enough, but in order to get any of this stuff through, they're going to have to persuade modern politicians to vote for it. Most of modern society would probably accept most of this stuff without comment, but most of modern society will also back down when some unpleasant extremist tells them to, and the idea of any of our feeble, spineless, gutless, popularity-obsessed leadership ignoring that pressure and voting this stuff through is comical. I'm astounded an MP has put his name to it. If this ever actually got any traction, his career would be over.

In short, great idea, not an icecube's chance in hell.

read through the whole pdf report. Really great initiative. Question will be whether it gets implemented and if so to what extend.

But never the less, it's good to see politicians aren't blindly copy/pasting the feminist dogma and talking points anymore. That in and off itself is a big change.
