Really it should put more spotlight on drug abuse but that's none of my business tho

Carrie loved her cocaine. Hitting that shit hard in your youth never really goes away, even when you stop. Got an....acquaintance who loves his meth and now has weakened walls in his heart. No way he makes it past 50.

What is this?
[–]Ricwulf 71 points72 points73 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Exactly this. Was coming here to comment that, but I'm glad someone already has.
This is one of those few things that completely sounds like Feminist BS, but it's completely legit. Men and women have different issues when it comes to heart disease.
[–]TracyMorganFreeman 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Substance abuse seems to something that affects men more though.
[–]NikoMyshkin 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
but how much overlap is there in the causes of heart disease between the genders? for example the substance abuse that at the least presumably contributed to Carrie's heart attack
[–]Ricwulf 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
To be honest, I think in relation to the article, it's a little irrelevant. Important, don't get me wrong. But on the topic of heart disease and identifying the symptoms, I think that focusing on how it can be different between the two sexes is important.
I know that this comment, and a few others are out of concern that men get the care that they need, but women do too. This is one of the few cases I have ever seen around here that I would say "derailing" is a legitimate criticism.
Let's not get too wrapped up in caring about just men and remember that there are some issues (mainly regarding health) that women do still have. I strongly believe that in this day and age, men are more disadvantaged than women (with at least 4 rights being denied to men that I know of). But this isn't going to help that.
So to end, spreading awareness about the differences between male and female heart disease is a good thing. Let's not try to derail with who is more at risk, because the original point of this awareness was not who is more at risk, but just how to identify what those risks might be.
[–]NikoMyshkin 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
hmmm
why not just say that both men and women suffer heart disease, and that the causes can be different but often overlap?
[–]Ricwulf 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Because it's obvious. However, right after a female celebrity has passed away after having a heart attack isn't a bad time to have a PSA about how heart attack conditions are different between the sexes.
Honestly, I'm one of the first people to leap at Feminists and SJWs gendering shit. This isn't one of those cases. This is nothing more than awareness, and I'm a little disappointed because it seems that people are trying to find something wrong with this, when there really isn't.
[–]Contageon 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And honestly its not something talked about a whole lot in relation to women. You always hear about men and heart disease/cholesterol problems. Even the marketing around it on TV is targeting older men. Naturally its because men make up a majority of the deaths for it but its not completely unheard of for women to get. It is probably one of the few medical areas where men are the primary target of something both genders have. So I personally think female heart disease should be fully explored.
The sexist part may come later when the proportion of funding for it dwarfs the men side. I mean initially it will need a surge of funding to get going but once it plateaus i wouldn't be surprised if it looked like the disparity in cancer research.
[–]cinnamonanon 11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You're quite right, I haven't done much research but it seems that generally women experience different symptoms during heart attacks, making them harder to detect, but this article showed a lot of bias.
The opening remark is that heart disease kills more women than cancer does, but that's actually true of men too. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, but also men. Heart disease deserves more attention, but not exclusively for women.

The problem is much of feminists own making. Researchers are being told that studying the difference between the sexes can harm their career:

Holy shit. Someone gracefully accepts that their view was a little off, and actually embraces the other sides' position. All in meaningful, civil discussion. This is something you would never see in /r/Feminism or frankly most other places on the internet. Makes me proud to support such a group of well-minded people.
[–]ItsJustASnip 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
WOW! What a sexist pig you are declaring that men and women are physiologically different! /s
[–]RockFourFour 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
And heart attacks are seen as something middle-aged family men have, not women.
I have no problem with increasing awareness of an under-reported/possibly overlooked health condition.
[–]BurialOfTheDead 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
But why does it not highlight general heart disease and in particular women's heart diseases? We have a right to expect more from our media.
[–]kutuup1989 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is one of those things that sounds like bullshit, but it's really not. Both genders have different causes for heart disease that the other gender tends not to get. How this relates to Carrie Fisher, though, I'm not sure, as I suspect a lifetime of drug taking is what took the toll on her heart, but then I'm not a doctor so I really don't know.
[–]Archibald_Andino 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think this is a good discussion to have. More women die of heart disease than breast cancer yet the feminist lobby has been very successful at hoarding such a disproportionate amount of funding for breast cancer which absolutely has been at the expense of other conditions. (Example, women's cancers receive 15x the funding of men's cancers). It never matter to them before because it was primarily men who were impacted. However, now we have a spotlight with Carrie Fisher that women with heart disease are affected by their hoarding too. Hopefully this discussion will lead to some change that, contrary to popular myth, other conditions besides breast cancer exist and perhaps breast cancer funding can share just a bit more.

Women have heart attacks usually at an older age than men, most probably during the post-menopausal period, because the levels of estrogen plummet, and estrogens are hormones that protect against atherosclerosis. That being said, before menopause, women have much lower risk to have a heart attack than men, because of the estrogen protection against coronary heart disease. After menopause, the rates of heart attack in men and women and pretty much similar.
However, a woman's symptoms are often different from a man's, and she's much more likely than a man to die within a year of having a heart attack. Women also don't seem to fare as well as men do after taking clot-busting drugs or undergoing certain heart-related medical procedures.
Also, diabetes increases the risk of heart disease in women more than it does in men, perhaps because women with diabetes more often have added risk factors, such as obesity, hypertension, and high cholesterol. Women who smoke are twice as likely to have a heart attack as male smokers. Also, many women don't experience the crushing chest pain that is a classic symptom of a heart attack in men. Some feel extremely tired or short of breath.
All these differences make the premise of the article very valid. It's not about feminist bullshit, it's about public health matters, and the intrinsic physiological differences between both sexes.

But no one wants to talk about how she was OVERWEIGHT FOR YEARS and how the SJWs had a melt down when disney asked her to lose weight to reprise her role!
[–]bufedad 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
All the comments in this post warm my heart. We know they aren't getting enough attention, we want them to get more attention, it doesn't matter that they are women. This is an issue that needs more attention, so we want it to have that attention.
[–]hivemind_disruptor 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I have zero problems with this, women heart problems are usually ignored.
[–]jimmywiddle 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ignored by whom ? Because the amount of funding women's heath issues get in terms of support and funding is about 15x that of what men get for their health issues.
If you mean ignored by the women themselves, then yes that needs to be fixed, however it also has to be fixed for men too as men are something like 5x as likely to die from heart disease.
[–]jimmywiddle 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
More men die from heart disease than women do. So really the focus should be on solving it for everyone but with particular attention focusing on male suffers to get those numbers down.
Its frustrating when you see people like the British Heart Foundation dedicating massive sections of their site to women suffers of heart disease and nothing for men and then next to that section they show the stats showing many more men die from it than women do. Awareness should be there for everyone but to obsess over the group that is suffering from it less makes no sense.

More men die of heart diseases than women but we must ensure more women survive than men, otherwise the king won't have a big enough harem.
[–]matttheepitaph 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is clearly an issue of awareness of women's heart health and had nothing to do with the fact that the woman snorted bales of cocaine in her 20s.

It's probably because heart disease has more subtle signs in women than it does men so women have to be more on the ball about it to notice it.

Because she is a woman? Is it really that hard to understand?
