Why the backlash against men?

It's not a backlash; it's simply the product of decades of feminists blaming men for everything bad that happens to women. They've successfully changed societal gender attitudes in a way that demonizes men in many ways. This is just more of the same.

Personally, I think it's feminism that's experiencing the backlash. Affirmative consent is being torn apart, and this whole effort is ironically drawing attention to false accusations, getting people to realize they're nowhere near as uncommon as feminists have claimed.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I actually think feminists have finally crossed the line, and the public is saying, "uh, yeah...no." Nowhere near a game changer for gender rights as a whole, but I think this has the potential to be a significant victory for men, and could potentially get the other issues we care about taken more seriously.

White men have been rhetorically condemned by feminists and in particular feminists in the academy for decades; the result is that, across the board, men have a reduced civil status relative to women. What we are seeing right now is a push on campus to fundamentally strip us of due process rights, and I personally believe that this stripping of civil rights is practice for a bigger, grown-up stripping of rights in society in general, still to come. The goal of feminism is now to subjugate men whenever this is convenient.

Basically, women want privileges above and beyond what anyone else has. However, they can't come out and say that they want everyone to simply lick their shoes. So, they need a scapegoat. And in a society where 40% of America can't tell you who won the civil war, it is easy to manipulate a history to one in which the white man has always been the privileged villain, and making up a majority in most first world countries, it is easy to assume when you simply look at raw data that white men hold all the power. Like, lets say you were looking at 100 men working at a job in the US, and 77% of them were white, it would seem like whites are favored disproportionately over any other race, and as long as you don't bring up the fact that whites make up 77% of the population of the US, then it seems to hold true. The same method was used with the pay gap.

Basically, white men are the scape goat because they already make up the majority of every workforce and seek higher paying jobs even if they don't enjoy the work. So, feminists can easily point at white men and say "look, they have the majority of the jobs and make a majority of the money, they must be doing something shady." and since the average person knows very little about how to read graphs or history and has no desire to learn about it, they will normally believe whatever they hear. So, it becomes easy to say that white men have an advantage because they will always represent a majority of the workforce and will always make more money, so no matter how many privileges you have, with a bit of tweaking of the facts, you can say that white men have more privilege than yourself.

tl;dr Feminism(progressives) go for white men because they are easy targets.

It's not a backlash -- this is the way it has always been.

It's called different things in different times but these moral panics went on under tradcons the same as they do now under feminists. The men in charge have always delighted in proving how much they protect women by brutalizing the men with less political power than them.

In the 1920s they hung young men accused of rape from trees.

These days they are much nicer about it as befits our century's way of doing things but the principle is the same: men accused of rape must be punished without an opportunity to defend themselves because the law courts just let off these "rapists" for the flimsy reason of their being no "evidence" of their guilt.

I think about this a lot. One idea I have is utopianism. Life isn't perfect, but no one can figure out exactly why, so a simple solution is to find someone to blame. White men appear to have the most power, so the blame easily lands on their shoulders. It erases the difficult complexities of how humans interact and how life works and boils it down to a sort of concentrated misanthropy. Much like how Christianity teaches that sin is the root of all evil, this sort of mindset teaches that the root of all evil is in these specific individuals and it's their evil that has let them prosper. All of life's problems (poverty, pollution, interpersonal strife) are neatly simplified, and as long as you aren't a straight white man you no longer have to question why life isn't perfect. Life is perfect--it's just those damn exploitative straight white males (or in a less extreme form, the oppression they have caused) that are/is the problem.

Another theory I have is that we are programmed to push males to show strength but our current society discourages these expressions in a lot of ways so males are stuck being asked to make their mark while having extremely few unique, individualistic ways of doing so. (Again, righteousness, fear, and shame have a lot to do with it; I think America tries to embody very unrealistic ideals and many including its own citizens resent it for it, even though its image in my opinion is at this point mostly a thin facade that serves its own benefit. I generally think people are angry because we aim too high, even though I think we sort of have to.) Anyway, so we end up with all these stagnant males who aren't doing much, not inventing electricity or new methods of travel (that help us), just making gadgets and new versions of the same old boring American dream. I think it's possible we've sort of hit a wall with innovation, though, I don't really know, we are doing new things with technology, like Skype, etc. Maybe I'm totally wrong--I just feel as though we aren't really hitting new horizons like we used to.

So because we don't have much use for these males, our next step is to try to create perfection out of what we have to ensure the benefit of our race, and that means making sure the half of the species that carries our babies, the more important half, can never suffer at all, even if it means the other half suffers more. So it becomes a noble thing to sacrifice the men on behalf of the women, since we are programmed to make some use out of the men, but we can't seem to figure out how to do that right now, because the species just isn't going anywhere else. However, after a certain point if we sacrifice them too much, civilization will definitely suffer and then we'll need them again and give them back the respect they had before in exchange for their service. These are all just odd assorted ideas of course, but basically I wonder if disrespect towards men has to do with a feeling that men aren't pushing us forward, while we feel entitled to those benefits from them as long as we love or praise them enough.

Men are dangerous to the plutocrats and their government stooges. We start the revolutions, hence we must be crushed, and one way to do that is to vilify us simply for being male. Another part of it is that most liberal, lefty, socialist, progressive ideas have come from white men -- vilify white men and suddenly their ideas don't look so good anymore. There are other factors, but those are two of the biggies.

For the Nazism it was Jews.

For feminists and SJWs in general it is white men.

Well there are going to be all sorts of theories about that because the truth is no one is going to be really know since the type of people who actually think this way about men are fucking nuts.

As an Anarchist my theory is that the people who take part in this widespread misandry are a supremacy group trying to establish a Matriarchy because they are trying to take over any seemingly important job they can get their hands on, so management positions, directors and even if they have to kick out somebody in order to do it that they perceieve as being part of the problem they'll do it. They targeted the univerisities and the professorships first ( this is confirmed by Christina Hoff Sommers ) and now they've got a pretty good foothold in mainstream media and politics they're trying to spread out into other areas like social media, the internet, games industry which they percieve as to being taken over by the 'patriarchy' and they must stop the misogyny in these places.

Honestly though, with our political system being the way it is, it could be just as simple as idiot politicians letting crazies get their own platform on an international level.

The outrage warriors want an easy PC correct target that won't get them much/any backlash.

Fighting oppression without actually having to face any opposition in other words.

They desire to crush a boogeyman so that they can feel that they have made a difference.

First it starts with the culture critics and then the attention seekers and profiteers (politicians classify as both) latch on to the new outrage business to try and get what they desire.
