Do you believe men are generally funnier than women?

This is a topic I gravitate toward. Many times it’s hard to try being funny as a woman, especially if you’re trying to be perceived as a “lady” Yesterday I watched “The Wrong Missy” and I felt the female protagonist carried the movie and she was the funniest character. I find many men and women funny.

In my day to day life, I hang out with women, so I hang out around more funny women than men. People find humor in what they can relate to. Not to say I don’t find men funny—of course I do! Love George Carlin, Jim Carrey, Graham Norton, and Dave Chappelle, among others.

Humour is subjective, however I believe gender doesn't affect how funny it is. Although I will admit when a women use sexual humour it isn't as acceptable and tends to be deemed as inapropate compared to men. I don't wanna sound like a "we live in a society" but there is an obvious social gatekeeping based on gender when it comes to humour.

In real life I know a lot of women with a great sense of humor, so no. I also don't like stand up comedians, but I mostly know the polish ones who are pure garbage. Maybe other countries have better stand ups, idk.

What I have realised is that, in real life, men will complain if you don't laugh at their jokes. There are these dudes who try to be funny all the time during parties or evening at the bar and it gets annoying quickly.

Men are better comedians, better at slap-stick, laughing out loud humor. But women can be good at that subtle, seeing-the-irony-in-every-day-life humor, like Tina Fey did with Mean Girls. Not a movie that will have you rolling on the floor laughing, but brilliantly written and it gets funnier every time you see it.

Not in any kind of inherent way, but I do think that since the male/masculine experience is kind of the “default” in our society that men’s jokes tend to be received as more “universal” than women’s jokes. It’s a matter of social power, not of some ingrained “funny gene” that men possess and women don’t.

Edit: Female comedian recs: I’m very picky with standup and find most of it insufferable regardless of the performer’s gender, but imo Tig Notaro is one of the greats. Her comedy is the golden trifecta of smart, unique, and fucking hilarious. I also enjoyed Taylor Tomlinson’s Netflix special. It’s kind of typical white girl comedy, but executed very well.

Depends on the type of humor. I find that male stand-up is generally funnier but in most other areas I find women funnier.

And when I say "most other areas" I mean anything from day-to-day conversation to screenwriting. Before the transition from co-ed middle school to all-girl high school one of my worst fears was that classes would be absolutely boring and we wouldn't have any clowns who could measure up to the guys. Thankfully I was very wrong.

Men are usually better at straight stand up style joke performative humor. Women I think do better as comedic actresses in a role or more subtle social commentary.

I find lots of women funny. And some men, usually British or Australian. Americans aren't very funny. I spent years wondering why films were labelled rom coms when they had no comedy in them.

Yes, especially in the comedy arena, sitcoms. Lots of women's humor is about their issues and although I'm female, they seem to by trying too hard and it sounds forced.

And it's insulting that they think because I'm a woman my sense of humor is so limited. Their routine is boring when they base it on gender issues and not issues applicable to everyone and it alienates.

Humor and anger are the two copes men are allowed by stereotypical gender norms, so we have much more practice. Women have other outlets to manage their emotions and thus don’t get as much natural practice as men do. So men are typically funnier than women.

There's also a lot of women who pity laugh at men's "jokes" because it tends to be an ego thing at times. I've never both men and women who are hilarious and both who try to be funny but are just not funny at all.

To a small degree, but that's because I feel that men reward the truly funny whereas women don't. I used to frequent local comedy clubs and saw plenty of women who put Amy Schumer or Sarah Silverman to absolute shame but because their humor doesn't follow a certain consensus of the 'right" humor. They're ignored. Whereas men can violate those taboos and still rise to the top (Dave Chapelle) is a great example of this.

I think it's easier for men to be funny to both female and male audiences. A lot of female humor tends to only be funny to women and doesn't do as well in e.g. stand up comedy as it does as dry remarks ^{during a wine tasting evening with the girls.} Same with gay humor, also not conventionally funny. I don't think this is static, though. I also don't think that this type of comedy lag we as women have can be quickly fixed. When we try to force it we get people like Amy Schumer, whose fans I've yet to ever encounter in real life as a city-dwelling feminist cliché.

No. I find most male humor not really funny. Like I get the joke but it’s more of an oh reaction.

But men sure believe they’re funny. I find most women laugh at men’s jokes out of politeness. I do this a lot at work. I’ve met maybe 2 men at work that were actually funny sometimes and I’ve been working for decades.

FWIW, I'm one of those people who gets way, way more comedic mileage out of a well-timed eye roll than a lot of physical gags.
