Our strategies are different and we select genetics differently.

As men can get a few women pregnant in one day, because our sperm is cheap, our instinct selects women who have enough genetics (potential) to have a child. We don't really care what happens next. Our bodies do not change and individually we are not in danger.

Women, as they are more at risk having a child, select men who are able to get them pregnant AND who have the potential to defend them. They have every reason to select well. Of course, society changes and the concept of security has changed as well, but notice that they keep selecting for the same reason in the end.

It doesn't just apply to men; although women just about all have easy access to dudes willing to nut in them, they do not all have easy access to men willing to stick around and help raise the resulting child, and the quality of the men willing to do so varies widely among women.

Woman unfit still mated and just died in pregnancy. Men unfit just never mated and died of old age or some other ailments.

Both genders engage in sexual selection; however, women contribute the majority of the sexual selection. One can say that this is due to their greater investment in reproduction, but that is not entirely true. In different species, the degree of sexual selectivity of the female varies greatly.

There is a natural element to this, but our biological impulses are also mediated heavily by culture. The primary male ability to contribute to sexual selection has been diminished by culture: strong men are not nearly as able to use physical violence to force women to mate with them, and prevent other men from mating with women, as such 'alpha' men would be able to in the wild. That said, human males never engaged in this type of behavior to the extent that males in many other species did. Finally, even if human males did use force more often to effect their mating strategy, the nature of male investment in reproduction tends to limit its effect on sexual selection. A dominant male may pick the the most attractive woman first, but he's likely to impregnate all the other women too.

So ultimately, women are picky maters relative to other species. And this manifests in their sexual desire: they have less raw libido than men, higher and less flexible attraction floors, more discrimination, and a greater willingness to walk away. Men are biologically and culturally not as likely to use physical force to sway outcomes to their side, and are also not as picky.

Men take less of a risk in the mating process. If a man knocks up a low quality mate it doesn't really matter because he can just knock another one up tomorrow. If a woman gets knocked up by a low quality man the absolute soonest she can have a do-over is 18 months from now. Thus women (and females of most species) are more selective.

It does apply to women in that more attractive women have sex more because men want to have sex with them more often. But in the early days of humanity, every womb was often needed during population bottlenecks when the future survival of the species was not certain, so men evolved not to be so choosy when it came to who to have sex with.

Natural selection is a scientific theory. It is what it is regardless of what Cosmo or Buzzfeed says. If you ignored pop culture and dealt only with facts you'd see that just because some quarters are telling men they have to date women they don't find attractive, that doesn't mean men are obeying that order. Some guys bemoan the fact that there are so many dateless men. There are just as many dateless women, they just don't feel the need to complain about it on social media so you're not as aware that they exist.

Sexually active is not the same thing as dating. If this question was asked from a female perspective it could be flipped around with commitment being the scare resource rather than sex.

So by that logic, women are indeed the inferior sex, because only top tier male genetic material gets passed on, but low value women spread their genetic material too. Those women are actually what's holding humans back, evolutionary speaking. They are also at fault for genetic defects and so on.

It doesn't. Everyone competes. Since there can only be one pairing at a time, those who are left out of that pairing have to look elsewhere. That applies to any and all creatures who sexually reproduce.

I believe that males are usually more sexually motivated across all species though, and that's already going to create a supply/demand disparity, which is why it ends up in most species with males performing for the chance to mate while the females pick the winners.

In species that are a little more intelligent, or who don't have much of a disparity in secondary sex characteristics, this phenomenon starts to disappear and it becomes more of a challenge between the opposite sexes rather than against the same sex.

The comment was, that this was how it was supposed to be all along. Nature made it so that women would only pick the strongest males, and the gene pool of the entire human specices would remain strong. Patriarchy was an obstacle to that, but now that that's gone, the natural order is being restored.

I disagree with the premise of your questions. There isn't any "natural" way for human mate selection to occur. It's marred by various outside influences, which include cultural and social norms. Current societal trends have led to the outcome where a significant percentage of university students are not sexually active, but it doesn't have to do with natural selection.

I don't buy into explanations based on evolutionary psychology, because they understate the importance of society. When girls start having crushes, they are taught a script, where they say most boys are gross and only a few are OK. Women repeatedly tell each other that having sex with men who aren't worthy cheapens them. Some women can be quite nasty towards women who have sex with men that their friends don't think are good enough. When men talk about sex, it becomes quite clear that many men have no problem with having sex with women they don't actually respect.

We can't necessarily change these messages, but PPD is great for having the herd explain the differences.

That's not natural selection. That's sexual selection. The reason they're not getting any sex isn't because they were devoured by ferocious predators or some such thing. Its because they failed to attract a female. Sexual selection has always worked with most pressure on the males of sexual reproducing species. That's the reason there is greater variety in human men than in human females, as well as with almost all other species. And the reason there are more male CEOs, inventors, explorers, etc.

However, women have also been under great sexual selection pressure. Moreso than in most species. Which is quite evident in the way it has even shaped their bodies (large breasts - like the peacock's tail - completely useless in natural selection).

There is also still natural selection going on. For instance, today there is a great selection pressure against intelligent women. They tend to have significant fewer offspring than less intelligent women. This will have an impact on the future of the species.

This is a totally bullshit argument.

Not because its trying to borrow from something that isnt real, Natural Selection is a thing.

But because the question mostly betrays a deep misunderstand about how natural selection works.

The idea that Natural Selection has anything to do with how we pick mates is absurd.

Human society is changing at an absurd rate, and natural selection is really really fucking slow.

Natural Selection is still trying to have people grow wisdom teeth, and thinks having massive tits is a great selector of childbearing ability.

Simply put, humans technology has improved as such a rate that natural selection simply cant keep up, we made it so easy for people to survive and grow that the ability to have kids is (for large parts of the world) not really a pressure.

Hell, we have the opposite problem, the people having the most kids are actually the least successful people, so if anything, Natural Selection would be pushing women to pick dumbasses.

Because that's how our reproduction works. Men have more generic variance than women because we have a Y chromosome where women have two identical X chromosomes.

If you wanted to personify it males exist to create a wide variety of genes so that whatever the selection pressure it more likely some genotype exists that will lead to advantageous adaptations. Females just exist to reproduce so they have two copies of the X chromosome because it's safer
