I have never asked a woman FIRST . IMO, It's never a good look for a guy to ask first unless you're over the top attractive and a woman will sleep with you regardless of anything you say.

They asked me and we proceed to have a conversation. Keep in mind I always approach conversation about sex from a very nonjudgmental and open place with women so it helps with rapport and feeling comfortable enough to have that dialogue. That being said, I definitely use this info in making decisions about the direction things continue to go.

I've asked every woman I've dated how many boyfriends they had in the past and whether they've had casual sex, so almost like asking for an N count but not quite. Really, I care more about screening for women who are too into casual sex or women who did way too much serial monogamy. I don't really care about what her actual count is.

If you want an honest answer to this question (or something that ressembles an honest answer) the best aproach is to let the woman bring "the talk" on her own terms.

Despite what people think on PPD, women are VERY concerned about men's past, and they will try to bring some topic related to sexual past at some point in a relationship, specially early on if they sense you are not "commited" enough. They do this for different reassons:

1) To bring some emotional closeness, have some "deep" conversation about feelings or boundaries, and to transition into other topics such as "what are we?".

2) To flaunt to you that they are "girlfriend material" ("hey, look at me, I've had only two LTRs, I'm a good girl") or to show you they want open up to you ("I dated around a lot but I'm not that kind of woman anymore, I don't keep exes around or in my friendlist and I like you, and I want to be honest with you").

3) To see how many women you have slept with and if there is some potential competition, or if you are a player, or if you are successful with women. All these things do matter to women, for good or bad.

So how do you make a woman want to talk about this just by herself?

Don't commit before she asks for exclusivity. If she likes you, she will ask for it, and she will ask you at some point about your N-count. Just act as if you don't give a fuck and don't ask her first, the moment you ask she will start lying.

If she ask you first, this is what has worked for me:

"More than you think but fewer than I would like."

Watch her go round and have fun.

Just remember, the less you ask, the more women will show you about themselves.

The back story is that the dude in question (unknown to her at that time) was literally one of my oldest friends. She later introduced us on the street, and he and I observed the niceties of meeting each other for the first time and then I turned to her and said, "He and I have been friends since long before you were born." - she was 12 years my junior and he and I had been friends from age 4.

Had she not been hinky about it, I wouldn't have asked at all, and since we've been Eskimo Brothers since high school - small town and all - I didn't give a shit.

My radar is finely tuned these days, and I can pick out "problem" women fairly easily. I realize that 99.99% of girls I fuck are going to have a sexual past, and I'm confident enough not to care, unless they've been piped so much that they're nuts.

I’ve only asked women with whom I wanted a long term relationship, or whom wanted one with me. So that’s 5 (although that includes times they asked me first which was 2-3, I don’t remember every conversation specifically enough.)

Each time it yielded valuable information that helped me determine compatibility and whether it was worth it for me to continue investing my time.

One girl I had been interested in continuing with had a number that was way above my comfort level and indicated a level of casual sex that would be a deal breaker for me. We’ve remained social media friends and I think it’s clear to us both that we like each other well enough but wouldn’t have been compatible. We’re both with other people now, her married, me engaged.

I've asked here and there. Asked my current girlfriend but we both expounded on it equally. It was never something I insisted on knowing and kinda just naturally ended up being discussed in a conversation about sexula experience.

Despite me not asking a whole lot of women and disliking the concept of "n counts" AND me having been promiscuous in the past myself, I would never touch a promiscuous woman with a ten foot pole. You tend to find out regardless anyway so obsessing over "n counts" is pointless. I think I find promiscuous women off putting for the same reason women find simps rather sad and pathetic. A simp often feels he can bargain sexual or romantic interest in the same way a promiscuous woman feels she can bargain validation/commitment/interest through sex. Both are unappealing. I think I find bargaining massively off-putting in general lol.

I don't think I've ever come right out and asked a woman directly what her N-count was. Doing so would be awkward and probably a huge turn-off.

The male approach to female n-count is more accurately described in this post, which is probably one of my all-time favorite posts on this subreddit.

The fifth bullet point from that post makes a point that is relevant here:

Rather than asking for n count outright, men employ guesswork to try figure out in their head what type of woman they're dealing with. Is she very sexually open early on? How many previous long term relationships and how long did they last. Is she a "party girl"? Are her female friends promiscuous? How does she behave when she drinks alcohol? I could go on, now guesswork based on these factors can never be completely accurate but they are definitely considerations men look at.

I have never personally asked women what their N-count is nor would I ever.

However, in freshman year in college, I do know one girl’s N-count was 23, three of which were all my roommates (they had an 8-person orgy; the 3 roommates, her and 4 other girls.
