Is there a power imbalance between a rock star and their fan?

I won’t share the link because im pretty sure a tiktok link includes your account name, but this was inspired by a tiktok from the account dandydemon on Sep 19.

Basically, she talks about backstage parties where musicians invite fans to hang out and presumably have sex.

I once worked at a concert for an edm group that would go on Instagram and recruit college age girls to go back them to their hotel room… and this stuff is so normalized

What exactly is the issue here? She described a consensual sex encounter between adults with no mention of coercion, manipulation, or force involved at all, and she described with the same tone as a pedophile handing out candy at a playground.

Don’t get me wrong, real power imbalances are an issue. A commenter on this tiktok lays it out perfectly:

there is no power imbalance with a rock star. A teacher, doctor, coach, police officer, boss can all affect your life if you say no

She posts a video rely to this comment where she doesn’t elaborate on the power imbalance and just acts incredulous.

What power does a rock star have over their fans that any other casual or committed relationship doesn’t have? The fans have the ability to not go backstage and presumably when they are backstage have the ability to say no to anything. If they are being drugged or forced that’s obviously different and wrong, but not because of a “power imbalance”.

I think this is emblematic of a view of male sexuality as inherently predatory. If a man is getting sex outside of a committed relationship with a woman, then he is somehow harming them. If a woman wants sex with a man more than he does with her, because he’s rich or famous or whatever, that’s called a “predatory” even when no harm is actually being done.
